Tell Us About Yourself

Name (s): Jocelyn Alyssa Timmons

Age: 18 years old

Please tell us a little about yourself.

2009 -I am a high school senior, and an honour student who plays on the volleyball team. I love playing sports and can’t wait to go to college next fall. My life is fairly uneventful and typical. I hang out with my friends a lot and fight with my brother, Ethan who is only a year behind me in school. I am extremely independent and very sociable within my group of friends. Outside of them, I guess I am fairly shy.

1878 -I am the youngest in the family with four older brothers. I suppose to some I can be called spoiled and maybe even a little selfish at times, but I try to do what I can for others. I am engaged to be married to the young man across the street, Jackson Chandler whom I have known all my life. Our parents have been the best of friends long before I was ever born and they are thrilled about our upcoming marriage. However, I just found out that my dearest friend, Olivia who lives next door, has been secretly involved with my favourite brother, William for months. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the two of them want to make my carefully planned out nuptials into a double wedding!

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less.

2009 -long reddish-brown hair, brown eyes, almost 5’6”, athletic build

1878 – long reddish-brown hair, brown eyes, almost 5’6”, slim build

Do you have any relationships you prize above others?

2009 -I value my three closest friends, Jenna, Caitlyn and Hilary. We all grew up together, play sports together and hang out most weekends. I am also really close with my brother, Ethan who is eleven months younger than I am. I also love to fight with him. I am closer to my dad than my mom but we all get along fairly well.

1878 -I am head over heels in love with my fiancé, Jackson Chandler.

Do you have a family?

2009 -My dad, Shane is the VP of Compliance at Chicago Memorial Hospital where my mom, Amy also works as a paediatrician. My older sister, Sidney is in her second year at Northwestern University as a pre-med student. I also have a younger brother, Ethan who I am very close with and enjoy tormenting.

1878 – My father, Patrick is a physician and my mother, Annabelle adores hosting parties and Sunday family dinners. I have four older brothers, Patrick II, James, Jonathon, and William. Also living in our home is our housekeeper, Mimi who is my sergeant mother and I love dearly. Her husband, Eddie takes care of our horses, drives our carriage and takes care of fixing things around the house. Their daughter Cora also works as the downstairs housekeeper. Sarah does all of our cooking and Missy takes care of the housekeeping upstairs.

Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

2009 -Every time the new kid across the street, Jackson Chandler comes near me I get nauseated, light-headed and cold chills. Stranger still, whenever he touches me everything goes black and I have visions of another time and place that are completely foreign to me.

1878 – My fiancé, Jackson Chandler gave me an elegant pocket watch for my eighteenth birthday, but every time I touch it I black out and see the most bizarre images imaginable. It’s almost like standing in someone else’s skin, but hearing your own voice in your head without having any control over the words your speaking or motions your body is making. But this young woman I get to be in these episodes has so much freedom and the ability to decide who she wants to be. I envy her so much that I almost hate her.

Tell Us About your world

Please give us a little information about the world in which you live.

2009 – I live in the suburbs outside of northern Chicago. I am a high school senior on the volleyball team. I also play on our school basketball and softball teams. I enjoy watching my younger brother, Ethan play football and attend most of our school games with my three best friends. My parents work all the time and are exhausted by the time they get home. My dad and brother love football and my mom is possibly the world’s worse cook. I am very excited about going to college next fall and am torn between joining my older sister, Sidney at Northwestern University or maybe even going a little south to Indiana University. My mom is pushing hard for me to follow in her footsteps and become as doctor like her. I’m not sure yet what I’m going to major in. All I know is it will definitely be something in the sciences, possibly neuroscience.

1878 – I live on an estate just outside the growing city of Chicago on the north side. My world is very restrictive and controlled, mainly by my father, Patrick but also by the example set by my mother, Annabelle. I am fortunate that I am allowed to go to school, at least until I get married this Christmas. But I would love to also go to college like all four of my older brothers. However, my father would never allow it. He believes a woman’s place is at home taking care of her family and running the household. At least my fiancé, Jackson encourages my thirst for knowledge and supports my efforts to educate myself on things that my father believes are not necessary for women to know such as politics and science.

Do you travel in the course of your adventures? If so where? Apparently I was born with the gift of EVE (Essence Voyager Era) which allows my soul to travel across time and live two completely separate lives on parallel planes of existence. I inherited this gift from my Uncle Monte whom I really don’t know at all…at least in one of my lives. Every night when I fall asleep on one plane (2009), I awaken to a new day on another (1878). Throughout my adolescence I was completely unaware of my gift until the barrier in my consciousness began to crumble recently allowing me to see glimpses of the other life in which I reside.

Name a couple of myths and legends particular to your culture/people. There are several theories and hypotheses about the gift of EVE and how it is passed on from one generation to the next.

What is the technology level for your world?

2009 – same as the year 2009

1878 – we have a telephone and a phonograph.

Does your world have any supernatural/mystical beings? Only the select few individuals who have the inherited gift of EVE.

Essence synopsis –

Our minds often wander, but can our souls? Jocelyn Timmons does not believe she is anything special — just an ordinary high school senior, living an ordinary life full of school-work, volleyball and friends. She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

Jackson Chandler moved in to the house across the street. His dark wavy hair, green eyes and charismatic personality draws everyone to him. Everyone, but Jocelyn.

Whenever Jackson gets near Jocelyn she feels ill and dizzy. When he touches her, she blacks out and has visions of another life, in another time. As the odd hallucinations evolve and become clearer, she feels a strong pull towards the people she sees there. Frightened, she watches her once stable life begin to crumble around her and she begins to question her own sanity.

Could it be possible that these episodes are actually her own memories of a life she is living somehow, somewhere, some-when? Maybe this is time-travel or some other paranormal mysticism? Our minds often wander, but can our souls?

  1. Essence, the first book in the EVE series, is simply amazing! It has a unique take on time travel and there’s no sci-fi involved. Funny, though, as it’s the only way time travel could be possible without breaking many of our fundamental laws of science.

The book, at heart, is mainly a young adult romance novel. However, I’m 42 and enjoyed the book very much. I got an advanced reading copy of the book and can’t wait for it to be published so I can read it again, with all the finishing touches added in.

Oh, and the ending, my, my…. it makes you want to rush out and buy the next book, Enlightened, in the series. Luckily, we don’t have to wait long as April is only 3 months away.
