Swift Six Character Interview – Ser Colin

Character Name: I am Ser Colin i’Nola, of the Order of the Morning

Which book/world do you live in? I was born and raised in the kingdom of Kholast, and I fight in the service of King Boris III. (In the novella, With a Broken Sword)

Tell us about yourself: I am the newest, and youngest, Knight of the Morning, which none of my fellows will let me forget. I squired for Ser Jane i’Julia for four years. First blooded at the Battle of Winter Creek. Knighted for valor at the Stone Hills Betrayal.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Ser Jane would say my greatest weakness was “exuberance.” Usually, she meant impatience to prove myself.

As for my greatest strength, it feels boastful to answer such a question myself. If I must answer, then determination. Though I am the last knight between the Berledthi invaders and the people of Three Bridges, I will not yield and I must not fail.

Name three important people/creatures/institutions in your world (such as lovers, pets, government institutions, leaders, gods etc).

1) The Order of the Morning, of course, and its members. Especially my mentor, Ser Jane.

2) Terrwyn. Only a seamstress, but an impressive woman, and the leader of the Three Bridges Resistance Army.

3) Three Bridges Resistance Army. Hardly an army. A collection of dockworkers, fishers, crafters and traders. But they have spirit. And spirit goes a long way.

What does ‘heroism’ mean to you?

Who will stand in defiance of certain defeat? Who will risk his own life to save others? Call that man a hero, but don’t expect him to accept the title. To him, there is no other option.

What do you think of your ‘creator’?

If he is responsible for those foul Querain sorcerers and their evil plans for the good people of Three Bridges, then he must be a sick individual.

Give us your favourite piece of advice:

“Kings come and go. Borders shift and change. It’s the people that matter.”

Swift Six Character Interview – Lord Archos – fantasy

The Light Beyond the Storm Chronicles BannerName/Race/Species/Age etc:

Name: Archos Terrian Stormrager, Lord of Tremellic, Lord of the Arcane Realms, Lord of the Storm. I am the Oncoming Storm. Lord Archos will do.

For you Lord Archos will do.

Race: I appear human, but in reality I am the last Skychild who walks this land. My father was a human sorcerer and my mother an Elemental – one of the servants of the Sky Goddess. I have met her perhaps three times. The woman who raised me as her own died so many years ago. All humans who carry magic have elven blood, and distant in my father’s line is such a lineage.

There are perhaps less than half a dozen people in all Erana who know this – for I am a sorcerer, and that alone means I am an outlaw and my secrets are deadly. If the Order of Witch-Hunters knew of what I truly am I am certain they would redouble their efforts to deal with me. As it is because of my position both as a nobleman and the relative seclusion of my home, plus monthly bribes and backhanders to those in power mean for now I am ignored. If I am careful.  Recently I have been more… forthcoming with my powers and skills and it has been noticed.

Not even I can take on large numbers of Order soldiers, especially when they bring banecrystal weapons.

Age: *Shrugs. I was born before the arrival of the last Plague and the instigation of martial law. That was centuries ago. One looses track.

Which book/world do you live in? I live in Erana. This world features in the Light Beyond the Storm Chronicles – which detail my adventures and those of my companions; Tales of Erana – these are tales of lore and adventure.

I’m an adventurer – why should I recruit you to accompany me? *Smiles. Because I am a Powerful Sorcerer, because I know a good deal of history and lore and because we will likely meet magic on our adventures. Despite the best efforts of the Order to irradicate it, magic persists. Can you deal with monsters, demons, terrible wounds and forbidden lore? I didn’t think so.

But then again I am not a man to take orders, from anyone.  So why should I agree to accompany YOU? Turn your question around – what can you offer me to tempt me to leave the safety of my valley?

Tell us about your companions?  How do they see you? Ah, my allies. Olek, my faithful Olek. He is a better man than I. We are closer than brothers, although to the outside world he is but a servant. Elves and half-elves can be nothing more. I trust him with my life, and he has saved it so many times. Once I took him from the execution cell – bought his life with gold and guile but he has repaid that many times over. No one knows more about me, and no one serves our needs with such devotion.  Olek is clever, and the most skilful thief and assassin in the land.

Do I have lady-friend? Yes, my beloved Dii’Athella. Poor Dii, for her life was hard and she survived with a determination and will I have rarely seen. Dii is a joy, she sees life with such wonder and such capacity to love. Despite all that has befallen her still she is kind, gentle and curious. We are bound in love and magic, nothing is stronger. Some say not even death can break bonds such as ours. I hope with all my heart we never have to test that theory, although it’s been close on more than one occasion.

Ozena is Olek’s lady. She came to me asking for aid to rescue her sister and the elves from her village. Such was young, naive and frightened; for her to as the assistance of a strange human would have taken a good deal of courage and necessity. Now she has bloomed into a talented young woman, a great archer and tracker and she speaks her mind. Yes indeed.

There are others, of course. My Steward Simon – who manages the villages and lands in my stead, especially when I am not available. He is a man whom I trust implicitly; he’s an excellent forger – and a man who sees far more than most about people. Of course, the villagers don’t know his past but Simon has served me for twenty years – and my people understand why we live as we live in seclusion. There is more freedom in Tremellic than any other settlement this side of the Far Isles. There are no Witch-Hunters, no slavers and such liberty is defended to the last man. One day I am sure the Order will come in numbers, and we will not go lightly. Simon ensures the villagers know what they have under my protection.

How do they see me? Dii loves me, Olek loves me, Ozena – I am not sure. She is a little apprehensive. I often appear arrogant and aloof – but for good reason and all know not to provoke my temper.  I  have taken many lives by my own hand and those of my allies. Do not trifle with me, and you will not feel my wrath.

Love is far more a powerful tool than fear but fear has its place. A person will die for loyalty and love of another. But the wrath of the Oncoming Storm is terrible.

What’s your most heroic exploit to date? The Shining Citadel. We found the lost elven citadel of Lor Ar’thinis. We almost died in the endeavour and the price paid was high – for the truths we found there may yet destroy us. Not to mention the loss of the Tree of Always. But we have that Power now, that knowledge and the hope it will bring when the time is right.

What’s your greatest failure? The death of my brother, so long ago. That I too late finding Dii to save her from the ‘attentions’ of the Order. That my spies and allies are not enough in number that they may be everywhere. That the Order of Witch-Hunters still blight this land with their pernicious law. I have buried more friends than I like to admit and mourned many others. The fight we fight is a costly one.

Where do you think you’ll be in a decade? *Looks thoughtful. I scry now and then to see the future but it’s a dangerous pastime; a friend told me war is coming and I believe her. I may well be dead in a decade, or up to my armpits in gore. Perhaps if I am very lucky we will triumph and free this land from the tyranny.  Who knows in uncertain times.

Do you have a great love? (This could be a person/trait/item) Dii. My Dii’Athella. Her light shines brighter than the sun and her kindness will likely save us all, should we live that long. Dii is far more than she knows, and even I know. Her magic is wild and off the old sort for she carries the Blood which Flows with the Light. Dii has bloomed like the flower which is ner namesake and we are all the better for it.

I suppose my other great love is magic. You must understand we live in a world where magic is forbidden, hunted down and chained. But magic is under the rule of no man, not in truth for it is everywhere and finds it way to be seen. The Order thinks they can stamp it out. For three hundred years they had tried and failed, although these days magic is afraid and hides its face. Magic is knowledge and knowledge is power, and freedom. One day the magic will truly return and it will no longer be a shameful secret.

Swift Six Character Interview – Coel – Fantasy

TOE Just One Mistake

#Fantasy #swiftsix #characters

Name:  Coel.

Which book/world do you live in? Tales of Erana: Just One Mistake – set in the world of Erana. I understand it’s a little like your world once was, but with more magic.

Tell us about yourself: (Name, race/species, etc.) My name is Coel, I’m human and I live in Varlek, the primary city of Erana. It’s not where I was born – but that’s another story. Valek is a jaded old crone but she shelters many sins beneath her gown, so for now I stay.

I’m an adventurer – why should I recruit you to accompany me? Songs. Everyone needs music – although they might not know it. Music is free and equal to those who it touches. Music cares not if you are man or woman, elf or human, slave or free. Music can never be tamed, not truly. And songs can rouse a man to war, or love, or glory.  I’m a bard; a singer of songs and teller of stories. Take me along and your deeds shall be remembered and retold.

And I am… flexible in my tastes so if you feel the need for a bedwarmer then I can please. Or if you need information then I can be persuasive.

Tell us about your companions?  How do they see you? I don’t have many ‘companions’ here. There’s Elsa – she’s friendly enough but then that’s her job. Oh and the Thiefmaster. Yes, him. He’s not exactly a companion, more of an employer. Not that I had much choice. He must like be, or think I’m useful. I’m still alive.

What’s your most heroic exploit to date? I stole a valuable item from right under the nose of the owner – an odious slaver – and laid his wife. Apparently, the man is now a laughing stock. Oh and then there is Arabella – but you’ll have to read my adventure for that story.

What’s your greatest failure? I don’t always think things through. I can’t see all the outcomes. But then who can?

Where do you think you’ll be in a decade? Dead. Unless I am very lucky indeed.

Do you have a great love? (This could be a person/trait/item) Music. Which I’m learning is a type of magic. When I sing I am free. When I sing I can be anyone, or anything. It doesn’t last forever, but sometimes it lasts long enough. But I’m just a conduit for it. Music does what it pleases with me. Sometimes I sound like a dying cat, sometimes I sing like a god.

There was a woman too – Arabella of Jaeden. And I’m quite fond of young Halecome – he’s sweet if rather dim.

Character Interview Number Thirty Seven – Sir Edric

Tell Us About Yourself

Name(s) Sir Edric Greenlock, the Hero of Hornska

Age Forty-one

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. Bearded magnificence.

Do you have a moral code? If so what is it? Morality’s just a self-righteous way of rationalising one’s whims. I aspire to reach the end of each day wealthier, happier and, most importantly, alive.

Would you kill for those you love? That is quite a short list, to be honest. But, yes, of course. If I had to save someone whose life I cherished (mine, for example) then I’d definitely kill someone who was threatening that important individual.

Would you die for those you love? One suspects not. There’s a vast yawning chasm between love and stupidity.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses? My strengths? Well… I did save the entire world from Ursk at the Battle of Hornska. So, heroism, leadership, modesty, cunning, martial prowess and being saviour of the world. My prime weakness would be that I was forced into marriage with a wicked witch. It’s damned inconvenient having to run away whenever the wife’s within a hundred mile radius.

Do you have any relationships you prize above others? Why? Yes, with Temper, and my other horses. They’re magnificent animals, far more reliable than men, and more trustworthy than women. A horse will never tell your secrets to someone else. I suppose Dog’s an acceptable manservant, and I quite like Corkwell (though I’d like her more if she weren’t so fond of manacles).

Do you like animals? Do you have any pets/animal companions? Absolutely. Pigs, sheep, deer, cows, they’re all delicious. In terms of companions, there’s Temper, Twenty-Six, Hamilton’s Trousers, Winterfilth, Moloch, Churl, Humpy and many other horses. A man cannot have too many trusty steeds.

Do you have any phobias? Not many. Uxoriphobia (fear of the wife) would be one. Also, manual labour. And poverty (though, fortunately, I am immensely rich).

Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself. I’m currently having an affair with the Queen of Awyndel.

Tell Us About Your World
Do you travel in the course of your adventures? If so where? Yes, to many places. I’ve visited the Tower of Uz-Talrak in Ursk territory, Greymond’s rather scruffy lands, the Forest of Bones and the abandoned ruins of Nyctipos. They’re crammed with marvellous treasures and assorted monsters (magical pygmies, undead, poor people etc).

Name and describe a food from your world. Andelic brandy. Splendid fiery stuff with a real kick. Damned expensive, but that’s what smugglers are for.

Does your world have magic? If so how is it viewed in your world? Sadly, yes. The pretentious pointy-ears and a few circles of jerks practice the arcane arts. Well, so they say. Most of their time is spent reading, mincing about in robes and fondling their wands.

Does your world have different races of people? If so do they get on with one another?Yes, we have the Ursk. Some of them are quite nice. Orff No-Balsac is a friend of mine (he does kill and eat people, but most of them are only peasants). Unfortunately, the world is infested with a plague of elves (they breed like rats and live forever). There are gnomes too, though they live quite far away.

What is the technology level for your world/place of residence? What item would you not be able to live without? We’re very advanced. Most towns now have a reasonably accurate clock, and water mills are increasingly popular.

I’d be dead without my crossbow. The fixation some knights have on their swords baffles me. You can kill someone far away with a crossbow, or shoot birds for dinner. That’s far superior to a sharpened piece of metal. Do you have any idea how close you have to get to poke someone with your sword?

Within your civilisation what do you think is the most important discovery/invention?Wine, I should think. Without it, we’d be chained to Soberon, God of Tedium, and imagine how boring life would be. Wine dulls the pain and invigorates the joy.

Character Interview Number Twenty Seven – Ephany

Tell Us About Yourself

Name (s): People call me Ephany, just Ephany.

Age: *shrugs. I do not know. It is not important.

Please tell us a little about yourself. Wouldn’t you like to know….?

I am a female half-elf, I work for the House of Thieves, and answer to the Thiefmaster, who in turn answers to the Oncoming Storm and the Shadowdancer. Have a problem with that? Hard luck to you. We are everywhere, we watch from the rooftops and the alleys. We are the Shadows.

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. That depends what I am doing…

Do you have a moral code? If so what is it? *Laughs loudly.

I do. It is not the same as yours, I dare say.

Would you kill for those you love? *Laughs even louder.

What do you think? I have. I do. I will.

Would you die for those you love? Yes.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths – I have been taught swordplay and shadowplay by the best there is. I do what is necessary to further the aims of the House of Thieves.

Weaknesses – why should I tell of something that can be used against me? That is just foolish.

Do you have any relationships you prize above others? Why? The Thiefmaster, of course. There is a young man I care for too – Gregori. At least for now. My life is dangerous and it is difficult and risky to get too attached to others. We die, we disappear and so love is at best snatched where it can be. There is affection, let’s put it that way. If I wish for a lover I take one. Why should I not – men do..

Do you like animals? Do you have any pets/animal companions? I do like animals, but aside from my pony I have no pets. I move around a good deal and often have to hide. The pony belongs to the thieves, really. Animals do not judge, they have no prejudice. They are not wicked, that is the territory of people.

I do not like people who mistreat animals, they are slightly higher up the ladder of scum than the Order of Witch-Hunters, but not by much.

Do you have a family? Tell us about them.

My mother was a courtesan, my father is a thief and an assassin. I have skills from both parents. I may have siblings – I do not know. The House of Thieves is my family.

Can you remember something from your childhood which influences your behaviour? How do you think it influences you? I was raised in a whorehouse, one of the higher class ones, but a whorehouse nonetheless. I know how to pleasure a man, and for that matter a woman, and sometimes this is a better form of persuasion than a knife. It is certainly a more enjoyable one, and usually longer lasting.  Do not get me wrong. It is my body and I use it as and when I wish, with whom I wish. My mother taught me diplomacy in the bedroom, my father taught me the… persuasion of the shadows. The skill set from my father is a little more direct.

Do you have any phobias? Phobias are a weakness. Why should I be afraid of the dark, when the darkness is my friend? I have no illusions and thus no fear. I am the shadows, I am the nightmare, I am the fear.

Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself. I once emasculated a man who liked to rape elves. He did not enjoy eating his own balls nearly as much as I enjoyed feeding them to him.

Tell Us About Your World

The world of Erana is dark, deadly and dangerous. We are ruled by martial law which is both corrupt and pervasive. Elves and half elves are not free. We have no rights, no protection under law, we are property. We are nothing. That at least is what the Order of Witch-Hunters propound. It is, of course, bullshit. One day they will find this out.

Do you travel in the course of your adventures? If so where? I go where the Thiefmaster commands. However recently I have escorted Lady Mirandra of the trolls to the Emerald Valley. Trolls know little of traps and ruins.

Does your world have magic? If so how is it viewed in your world? Erana is a world of magic, but magic is forbidden. Magic persists, it cannot be imprisoned, despite the best efforts of the Order. The Society of Hidden Secrets is proof of that. I am proof of that as an adept. I have magic in my blood which….enhances my abilities. The Order are fools, but they are powerful fools, with the law, such as it is, on their side.

Most humans fear magic, they do not understand it and they are too ignorant to learn. The Witch-Hunters keep it so.

Does your world have any supernatural/mystical beings? Please tell us about some. *Shrugs. I have fought with monsters which do should not exist but do. I do not know exactly what they were, except bad news.

That is a very strange word – supernatural A being beyond the laws of nature? Nature has many laws and many creations, that we are too ignorant to understand them is not nature’s fault – it is ours. Nothing is beyond nature – it is merely beyond our comprehension. If you are asking whether my world has magical beings then yes, of course. Does not yours?

Within your civilisation what do you think is the most important discovery/invention? The bow. Many have fallen to it. I think it is the ultimate weapon of war.

Character Interview Number Twenty-Four – Alan McDonald – Fantasy/Military

Name (s): Alan (Mac) McDonald

Age: Thirty-something.

Please tell us a little about yourself. I was the officer commanding SBS 4 troop, UK Special Forces Anti-Terrorist Wing. My team and I are specialists in everything to do with killing bad guys in inventive and prejudicial ways. Since our transfer to Arden, however, we’ve transferred all that testosterone onto the Horde.

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. What James Bond wishes he could look like.

Would you die for those you love? Was that a loaded question? I did die protecting those I love, and was transported to this hell-hole of a planet under attack from soul-hungry mutants. And although there was no one special back home, I must admit, I worry how my parents will take the news of my ‘death’. If only they knew.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengths? I’d say it’s the ability to make the best of any situation. Life has taught me to be flexible, and to adapt to whatever circumstances I find myself in. Just as well really, seeing what happened eh?

As for my weaknesses? Although I try my best to be patient and courteous, I don’t suffer fools gladly.

Do you have any relationships you prize above others? Why Well, my team will always hold a special place in my heart. We’ve seen each other through thick and thin, after all.

But, since I arrived in Rhomane, there’s Jayden. She’s pretty cool for a Tec-head, and has a great In-your-face sense of humour. If I manage not to get myself devoured, I think things could get very serious…if she wants to?

Can you remember something from your childhood which influences your behaviour? How do you think it influences you? I’m 6th generation military. I think that says it all. Both my father and grandfather had a great deal on influence during my early years, and I suppose it was inevitable the course my life…and death would take.

Do you have any phobias? The Horde. Have you met them? Twelve foot high, esoteric concentrations of rabid hunger – with fangs and talons – just itching to shred your soul. Apart from that? Not much fazes me…except for Smurfs. They’re so small and blue…you just can’t trust them.

Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself. I know Victoria’s secret. And it makes me feel kinda…naughty? J

Tell Us About Your World

Please give us a little information about the world in which you live. Arden is a planet on the far side of our galaxy, along the Scutum-Centaurus Arm (Sounds like a bad chest infection doesn’t it?). She has a red sun, and was once the home world of a civilization that had employed advanced technology for over twelve thousand years on more than thirty planets.

In some ways, it’s much like Earth, although the leaves and grass have a coppery-blue tinge, and the air has a permanent zesty tang to it. (Great for gin and tonic)

Do you travel in the course of your adventures? If so where? Travel is pretty much restricted because of the Horde. If we do go out, it’s only in small groups and only then with a heavily armed contingent, (which I so happen to oversee).

We use skimmers, an anti-grav form of hovercraft, and their larger counterpart, a skidder.

However, recently, we discovered an Avenger Class Cruiser in orbit, The Arch of Winter, so who knows what we might end up doing with that. (I know, boys and their toys, but c’mon…her guns are so big and shiny).

Name and describe a food from your world. Lolath is pretty good. It’s very similar in appearance and taste to a cow, although its milk yield is considerably lower. But by far my favourite is rhobexi. It’s what you’d get if you cross a deer with a bull. But how to describe the taste? Very rich, it’s like a blend of venison and lamb, and the more you chew, the more the flavour floods your mouth.

(Nom Nom!) (And I’ve got one of the griddle, right now)

What form of politics is dominant in your world? (Democracy, Theocracy, Meritocracy, Monarchy, Kakistocracy etc.) From what we can ascertain, the politics of the Ardenese people was senatorial based. Saying that obviously makes us think of the Roman Empire back on Earth, but the Ardenese form of government was quite different, as their society was extremely advanced and enjoyed a level of intellectual and cultural sophistication that simply has to be seen to be believed.

We’ve only been able to witness it from archived holo-clips & digi-crystals. However, the examples we saw blew our minds. All representatives worked for the greater good of the people, and, while everyone was viewed as equal, each had a personal responsibility to fulfil their individual roles within society.

Officers of the Senatum – Magisters – were elected each year from the prefects, normal members of society who had been voted to represent each of the cities. While each prefect served on an annual basis, once selected as a Magister, their responsibilities expanded to encompass an entire district. The presiding officer of the Senatum – the Chief Magister – was a tried and tested politician chosen by his peers to serve as their leader. He remained in office for five years.

What is the technology level for your world/place of residence? What item would you not be able to live without? Like you, I come from the twenty-first century. But I was transported the equivalent of twelve thousand years into the future, so, you can only imagine the level of technology the Ardenese must have employed.

I say – must have – because remember, even the most advanced group brought here by the Architect are only from the earth year 4200.

Think of a comparison:

My grandfather was born in the 1960’s. During his life, he saw the advent of space travel, the digital age, world-spanning communication devices you could keep in your pocket, and micro surgery. And they are but a few examples. His grandfather – just two generations before him – would never have dreamed of such things.

So…just try to imagine that level of advancement, multiplied over six hundred generations. That’s what we ended up inheriting.

The trouble is, we don’t know how to use it. The Architect has assisted us in this regard, with nano-technology that enhances our natural learning curve, but it’s still been a monumental struggle.

Out of all the delightful things we’ve discovered, I love the stealth technology, and the micro-singularity grenade. It’s a Special Forces wet dream come true, as it doesn’t leave any mess behind. No witnesses, no long and troublesome reports.

Look, I’d love to stay, but I’ve got a rhobexi burger on the barbecue. It’s just about done, and if I’m not there when it reaches perfection, some swine will eat the evidence.

Thanks for dropping by and asking a few questions. Any time you feel like swapping places, let me know J

Character Interview Number Twenty – Arywn of Heron – Fantasy/YA

The Guardian Child’s Return

Tell Us About Yourself

Name: Mistress Arwyn of Heron, apprentice scholar.

Age: 15

  • Please tell us a little about yourself. I am Mistress Arwyn of Heron, youngest daughter of Lord Tiernan and Lady Lei.  I am a grower; that’s plant magic.  Growing up there was sort of the expectation that I would likely marry well and have a lovely farm, grow lots of food, have lots of kids, that sort of thing.  But after my sister’s big adventure, and the Guardians returned I started reading all that I could find about the Guardians.  I am apprenticed to the scholars now, learning to be a scribe. There’s so much to learn about the history of Feyron that they don’t teach us in summer academy.  It’s all very exciting.
  • Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. Long, wavy coppery-chestnut hair, chocolate brown eyes, dainty and petite.
  • Do you have a family? Tell us about them. What a funny question.  I guess I’m used to everyone knowing who my family is.  My father is Lord Tiernan of Heron, and we are unicorn-children.  We have creation magic. My mother is Lady Lei of Phania, and she was a scholar’s apprentice in her youth.  I guess you could say I’m following in her footsteps.

My older brother, Nye, will be the next lord of the clan when father is ready to step aside for his life of leisure, but I don’t expect that will be for quite some time to come.  My older sister, Aideen, is the Dreamweaver, the representative of the Guardians to the Court of Clans, as well as the hope for the future of two clans.  You see, her husband Nolan is the last descendant of clan Tyrel, the true sorcerers, and the healers of clan Vidya.

The newest member of our family is the guardian-child, Shyamal, son of Lady Kali. Aideen says he was just a little black water serpent when she found him in the Stoney Deep, but his mother gifted the form of a little black puppy before they returned from their adventure.  He’s been my constant companion almost since he arrived, but believe me, just because he spends most of his time racing about getting into this and that like a mischivous toddler does not mean he’s a pet.  I wouldn’t ever think of guardian-children as pets, even if they do look like animals.  But, they are definitely great friends.

  • Would you kill for those you love? Kill…oh my!  No, I…I don’t think I could ever kill at all.  That’s just so far from my gift of creation magic.  I don’t know how hunters and animal keepers can look something in the eye and take its life away.  I have respect for that ability, for I appreciate the food I eat, but I don’t think that I could take anything’s life.
  • Would you die for those you love? Would I die for those I love?  Hmm.  Before I went on my quest for Lord Grypos and actually faced danger for myself, I think I would have been just as confused by this question as I am by the last one.  But now…

*sighs heavily*

Now I know that such choices sometimes happen, especially if you are traveling outside of the Fertile Plains.  I hope if such a situation happens again, and it is my magics that can make the difference, that I will be brave enough to do so.

  • Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself. Well, I was paired with an earth-child in my early years, for planting day.  Growers, earth-children, and water-children work together to plant the fields.  Our folks sort of expected we would have our second lives together, but I decided to join the scholars.  I don’t know how interesting that is, but it is sort of unusual to not follow a recommended pairing that has been set up.

Tell Us About Your World

  • Please give us a little information about the world in which you live. Feyron is the realm of magic.  This is where all magic originated.  In the beginning of days, the Children of Tomorrow traveled the River of Life to the different Worlds Beyond, and that is how the clans of magic were founded.

Magic in Feyron is as natural as eating or breathing, although I understand on some Worlds Beyond it has been seen as unnatural or even dangerous.  I cannot understand how any people could not see the many helpful uses of magic.  Oh, I guess that answers your question about magic in our world.

  • Does your world have religion or other spiritual beliefs? If so do you follow one of them? Please describe (briefly) how this affects your behaviour. Religion, I have heard of this term from the Worlds Beyond, but we have no such thing here.  As for spiritual beliefs, we know that our essence moves on to the Beyond when our time is done.  The light of Feyron guides those of the Faie, while the daughters of the mists guide the Nimisa along the sacred path to the Beyond.
  • Does your world have any supernatural/mystical beings? Please tell us about some. Mystical beings?  As in, from the Realm of Mists?  All of the beings of magic on all worlds came from Feyron.  The creatures of the wild magics are from the mists, and the daughters of the mists are from the mists.  I already mentioned them.  They are the Keepers of the Sacred Path, sphynxes, and they guide the light within each person to the Beyond when they have passed.
  • Name and describe a food from your world. The most amazing food I have ever found was a little tree, lost and forgotten in the desert.  With help from a friend, I was able to awaken it.  The fruit from that tree was so sweet, and it was magical!  It was a tree of regeneration, and the fruit was healing. Sadly, the tree was destroyed in an accident, but luckily I had saved a seed from a piece of fruit Shya had eaten.

*softly strokes the knotted scarf about her neck*

  • Does your world have different races of people? If so do they get on with one another? I’m not sure I understand this question.  There are the Faie, the people of magic, and the Nimisa, those from the Worlds Beyond who are not Faie.  On Worlds Beyond I understand the Nimisa are often hostile and violent, but there are no such problems here.
  • Name a couple of myths and legends particular to your culture/people. Well, since I’ve talked about the Children of Tomorrow and the clans of Faie, why don’t I tell you the Beginning Tale?

The Tree of Life

A soft, tinkling music filled the air, blending with the sound of the waterfall as it flowed over the crystal columns of the mountain on its way down from the snow covered peaks above.  The great tree stood, as it always had, in the shadow of the waterfall beside the Sacred Pool in the hidden meadow, a gentle sprinkling of pink petals perpetually falling over the milky waters.  Floating on the water beneath the tree, the delicate petals swirled on the eddies eventually following the currents below the surface.

Dark as the depths she traveled from, her black tresses glistened blue in the morning light as they trailed through the grass behind her.  Wearing the form of Lady Kali, she crossed the soft emerald grass slowly, approaching the great tree with reverence. Wrapping her arms about the trunk, she crooned softly as she pressed herself against the smooth bark of the tree.  A host of brightly colored fairies began to appear, fluttering up from the flowers scattered throughout the meadow.  They sang as they circled about her, and she sighed as she released the tree and knelt in the grass beside it.

In one hand she held a sliver of obsidian, with the other she held the train of her hair. Slowly she cut half an arms length from the bottom of her hair and gently scattered the strands over the milky water.  As the black strands floated, mingling with the pink petals, they began first to swell and then to wiggle.  Little black water serpents formed, a single fin colored in the blues and greens of the depths running the length of their backs ending in a long, flowing fan at the end of their tail.  They played and danced together in the Sacred Pool, happily nibbling on the petals.

Leaning in close to the water she whispered, her tone soft and reassuring, “Children of Tomorrow, born of Feyron, follow the currents, find your true homes.  There are many Sacred Pools, you simply have to find your place.”

Little by little the serpents swam away towards the waterfall and the deep currents until only a handful remained.  “So be it then, your life begins here.  I will summon a Guardian for you, and then I will see to the others.”

Meet My Character Blog Tour

I have been invited by JC Mells to participate in this blog tour, discussing a character from a work in progress or recently published work.

JC is the author of the Pierced Series.

Website/blog: http://www.jcmells.com

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/J-C-Mells/428567953902490?ref=hl

Do check out her blog to learn about her characters and those of the other authors involved. This is going to be an ongoing blog tour so follow the chain to find some wonderful new friends.

Here are the questions to answer about a main character from a WIP (work in progress) or recently published work:

1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?

The main character of my current Work in Progress is Mirandra Var, she is a female troll, and daughter of the shaman. I guess that makes her a troll princess. Troll society is matriarchal so the women are in charge.  She is, of course, fictional.

2) When and where is the story set?

The novels are all set in the fictional fantasy world of Erana, which is a medieval-style world, loosely based on Europe at the time.  In the context of the books this is set roughly 18-24 months after the events of book I and several months after the events of book II.

3) What should we know about him/her?

Mirandra is a half-troll. Although to all intents and purposes she counts as a full-blood troll.  As I said the Trollkind are matrilineal so it would be her mother’s line which is important. Mirandra is the daughter of the Shaman, Kherak, and her father is Lord Archos, Magelord of Tremellic, although this only comes to light in book II.  She is young for a troll, about thirty one or so, when she leaves for her adventure – her Proving.  Trolls are generally attractive, intelligent and cultured, unlike most of that race portrayed elsewhere.  She is clever, brave, but she has doubts and fears like everyone else and this book is about her, her journey and what it means to be a Shaman.

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

Mirandra is heir to her mother, but in order to rule she must undergo a Proving – a test or series of tests to prove she is worthy. These tend to be different for every Shamania – the heir apparent – and each one carries substantial risk. One of her ancestors was crippled and another died during the Proving. There is more to the adventure – some kin in the far hills are missing and Mirandra must discover what has become of her distant cousins. Not only that but they encounter unexpected hostility from the locals, creatures which should not exist and far more questions than answers.  What is discovered and what is lost will be important in later books and the overarching plot of the series.

5) What is the personal goal of the character?

To survive her Proving, to find her kin, to lead her people wisely in the upheaval to come.

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

The Stolen Tower.

At present there is not much about that book on my blog but the series is listed.  Once the first draft is finished I will post up a lot more.

7) When can we expect the book to be published?

By the end of 2014.

Character Interview Number Twenty-One – Olek – Fantasy

Tell Us About Yourself

Name (s):  Olek Marison, the Shadowdancer and the Watcher from the Shadows.

Age: about 40, I think, although I could not say precisely.

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. Black hair, red and gold streaks, half-elf male, ivy-leaf tattoo.

Do you have a moral code? If so what is it? Ah yes a moral code. I expect mine is not the same as yours, morals are for those with the luxury of freedom. The morals I have are not the ones society says I should have.

If I must choose it would be loyalty to my master, to my lady and his and to our cause. If I am your friend I will remain so, if I am your enemy then beware the shadows for they have eyes.

I do what needs to be done to protect us, and those we help. I am a thief and an assassin. I have killed more times than I can remember but there are worse than I in this dark world. There are those who take freedom and life and pretend they do so in the name of law; these are the slavers and Witch-Hunters and those I kill without guilt. For they have chosen that profession and they bring such sorrow to the world. There are those who simply to not see what is staring them in the face, or turn away and it sometimes they need to be reminded about reality.

Would you kill for those you love? Without a doubt, and I have.

Would you die for those you love? Oh yes, my life belongs to my lord, my friend and my master, and I would die for him without regret.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengths: I am loyal, I am talented and the shadows are mine to command.

Weakness: I tend to see the worst in people. Experience has taught me that.

Do you have any relationships you prize above others? Why? Archos, he is my lord, my friend and as close to brother or father I have ever known. He saved me from the gallows, but more than that he has shown me kindness, friendship and he does not treat me as a slave. Elves and half-elves have no rights in Erana, you understand, but with him I have wealth, I have freedom to come and go as I please, I have been educated and I have been loved.  He trusts me I make sure I do not disappoint that trust. I was a street urchin, with nothing, and now I have so much more, he is a remarkable man and it is my honour to serve him.

My lady, Ozena. There have been other women, but none like her. She is brave, and she speaks her mind. Even after this time there is an innocence about her which I love. She has such a wild spirit. Ozena is a good person, far better than I.

Do you like animals? Do you have any pets/animal companions? I tend to prefer animals to people. We have many horses, my favourite is my gelding, Shadow, but they all serve us with love and loyalty. The manor has various goats and fowls for food, although they are generally cared for by the housekeeper. Animals do not judge, nor do they care if one is an elf or a human and they love unconditionally. There is a Spirit Raven which is the familiar of my mistress Dii’Athella, but I don’t suppose it counts as an animal.

Do you have a family? Tell us about them. I have no blood family – my mother died giving birth to my still-born sister and I do not know who my father was. My mother was a whore, and it could have been any one of the human men she entertained at that time.

Archos, I’ve mentioned. He is family to me, and Ozena, my woman and Dii, Archos’ lady.

Can you remember something from your childhood which influences your behaviour? How do you think it influences you?Elves have no rights, my mother, as I’ve said was a whore. That was not her choice. I would supplement our income by removing the trinkets of her clients. When a man is otherwise engaged his mind is not on his purse. As the child of a slave I was also a slave but the Madam who controlled us would also get me to steal for her. When my mother died I was expected to pay her debts… by any means. How does it influence me? I suppose you could say I will do what needs to be done. I despise slavers and I will fight to my last breath to free any woman forced to do what my mother did.

Do you have any phobias? Losing those I love.

Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself. I will eat pretty much anything, when one has to survive in the Enclave and is always hungry, one eats what one can. I have eaten, rats, cockroaches, snails, maggots, rubbish, rotting food, snake and salamander. I used to know a great recipe for rat stew.

Tell Us About Your World

Please give us a little information about the world in which you live. My world? Ah yes Erana. Once it was glorious, once it was mighty but now it is dark, it is full of corruption and hatred. War and Plague will bring even the greatest low. There are those who think they run the land, the Order of Witch-Hunters, but they control it for their own gains. They rule by fear, and division and I must admit they are very successful in that. However they do not have everything their own way, there is resistance. Not that I know anything about that at all…

Does your world have religion or other spiritual beliefs? If so do you follow one of them? Please describe (briefly) how this affects your behaviour. If I am honest I am a little too cynical to put much faith in the gods, but I know the mages follow them more than I. Oh they exist, of that I have no doubt, I have seen their work first-hand but whether they help the likes of me, that is another question. The Witch-Hunters do not encourage the old beliefs, the gods and the demi-gods, the magical creatures are anathema to them. How do they affect my behaviour? I hedge my bets and toss a prayer their way when I need it.

Name and describe a food from your world. As I’ve said, rat stew… yummy. Well not really but meat is meat when you are hungry. With some pilfered veggies, and bread which is not mouldy there is a meal which will keep you alive and will not kill you. Usually anyway.

Does your world have magic? If so how is it viewed in your world? Of course. Although if the Witch-Hunters have their way it will be eradicated. They have not been successful thus far. Magic is magic, it has many forms and it will not yield to the laws of men.  Officially magic and its practitioners are illegal. Mages and adepts can be executed, simply because they are magical, if they are caught. Mages live in hiding, or disguise their skills and apothecaries, or wise folk. Poor Dii, my kind and gentle mistress, was tortured and raped by the Order, because she was an elf and a mage. Were it not for Archos she would not have survived.  Even adepts, like myself, are not safe although our skills are easier to hide.  I can command the shadows, I can walk in silence and I can fight like few other men can. Archos always tells me magic demands a price and sometimes that price is freedom, pain or even death.

Does your world have different races of people? If so do they get on with one another? There are elves, half-elves, humans and trolls. Elves and half-elves are generally slaves to the humans, they certainly have no rights. Many humans blame the elves for the Plague, although whether this is the truth I have no idea. Archos is the man to ask on that. Trolls tend to keep themselves to themselves; they live in the mountains and remote areas and trade among themselves. They are magical and far nobler than the other races if you ask me, although they do like to war, so I’ve been told. I have only encountered the Trollkind recently but they are decent folk.

Oh and there are the Fae, but WHAT they are I have no clue. They came from one of the lost magical realms, nasty bastards they are as well. Or at least the one we found was, he is….no longer a problem.

Name a couple of myths and legends particular to your culture/people. Hmm, well let me see. There is a nymph in a magic glade in the Shimmering Forest, she is one of the old forest folk, a magical creature and guardian of the sacred places. My Ozena found her from a childhood story and her lover is a toad, an elven prince cursed by wicked magic.

A troll goddess guards the route to the Temple of the Sky, and it is her whim, or not that one may pass the sacred waterfall. Her daughter is a flower….

What is the technology level for your world/place of residence? What item would you not be able to live without?Technology? We have iron or steel swords, armour of the same, for those who can afford it and people get about on their own feet or horseback. Archos has a magic powered hot water urn, and there are magic powered lights. What do you have?

What could I not live without? As I have lived with next to nothing I can make do with my own bare hands. What would I WISH not to live without? My drake-metal swords – iron magic-forged with drake’s blood. They are strong, they are sharp and they give me an edge…well two as they are paired…Apologies, bad joke. Ozena laughs at my humour but I am sure she is just being polite.

Does your world have any supernatural/mystical beings? Please tell us about some. As I’ve said there are a few, although they are rare and generally live in hiding. Archos is a Skychild, and an Archmage. I think he is the last of his kind, although I doubt they were ever common. There are gods, and demi-gods but they rarely show themselves. Being ruled by the Order does that. We found an Avi-tam, an air elemental, recently but aside from the fact she is a creature of magic and serves a goddess I could not say WHAT exactly she was.
