Swift Six Character Interview – Graham Weatherend

Name Graham Weatherend

Which book/world do you live in?

Orange City

Tell us about yourself: (Name, race/species, etc.)

Graham Weatherend/White/Human

I’m an adventurer – why should I recruit you to accompany me?

Well, I may come off as meek but I started an uprising in the City I was sent to when I learned the terrible things they were doing to their citizens, so I’ve become an adventurer. I can show you the way…now.

Tell us about your companions?  How do they see you?

My companions are Marlena and Mick. Marlena is my girlfriend. We’ve been through a lot, mostly because of the soda addictions from my ad campaign, but we’ve weathered that storm. Mick is a former friend who sold me out. He used to think of me as spineless, but now he sees how powerful I can be when I put my mind to something.

What’s your most heroic exploit to date?

Rebelling against The Man and the City that kept us under its thumb. After ten years of oppression, it was time.

What’s your greatest failure?

Probably the way I treated Marlena when my addictions got the better of me. It hurts me to know that I had the ability to behave in the way I did.

Where do you think you’ll be in a decade?

Right now, I’m off to return to the Outside World. It has been ten years so I don’t know what it will be like but I can’t imagine it will be worse than the City. Hopefully I will still be with Marlena and we’ll have children and I hope, happiness. We deserve it after so long.

Do you have a great love?

Again, Marlena. She’s the reason I started an uprising against the City. She’s the reason I do everything and have become a better man.

Meet My Character Week – Lexa Greene – Guest Post by Rebecca Tran #Paranormal #werewolves #dragons #fantasy

An Interview with Lexa Greene by Rebecca Tran

Hunted (Dragons of the South Book 1) by [Rebecca Tran]

The variety of people I interview never ceases to amaze me. Recently I was in Arizona on a business trip. My producer called and asked me to interview a friend of her mother’s. She assured me there would be a story. I was expecting an older woman, that’s not what walked through my door.

“Hi I’m Alexis Greene, you can call me Lexa. Sarah asked me to come in for an interview.” Lexa said politely as she stepped into my room. She was about my height with caramel skin, deep brown curly hair, and large brown eyes. She wore leggings and a blouse that fell off one shoulder. Underneath was a large dragon tattoo. Lexa straightened her top, but part of the head remained visible.

I offered her a seat in the only other chair in my small hotel room as I got situated. “So, Lexa can you tell me a little about yourself?”

“Well like I said, I’m Lexa Greene. I’m a werewolf and my mate is Hunter Silver a dragon and the Enforcer for the Southern Territory. We haven’t been mated very long. Of course I haven’t been out of the witches cage very long either.” Lexa told me like all of it was common knowledge.

It took me a moment to process what she said. Werewolves, dragons, and witches all in one sentence was enough to make your head explode. I didn’t know if I should believe her or laugh. Although, whether true or not, my last interview with Hayden North who claimed to be a dragon was one of my most popular. I took a deep breath and started the interview.

“It certainly sounds like you’ve had an amazing life. I see why Sarah asked you to come by.” I smiled at her, “Would you say Hunter is the love of your life then?”

“Hunter is my life now. You can’t imagine what it means to have a mate until you do. Even as a wolf I didn’t truly understand. He was made for me and the sex… well” She smirked, “everyone should be so lucky.”

“What quality do you like most in a man?” I asked her. It was always interesting to hear what people found attractive in their loved ones.

Lexa didn’t pause yet the answer she gave surprised me. “Honesty, and integrity.” Lexa must have sensed my surprise because she went on. “Hunter is handsome, strong and very capable. But I can get that anywhere and I can take care of myself. It was his personal code that got me. When he gives his word he stands by it. If he can’t it nearly kills him. After being hurt before that’s pretty important.”

“If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?” I asked her.

Lexa looked troubled. There was a tear in her eye when she answered. “It’s not fair to him. We aren’t equals. I’m not as strong as he is and in the territory he constantly has to protect me. If I could I would be stronger for him.” Lexa swiped at the tear as she looked away pulling herself together.

“What is your greatest regret?” I asked her hoping I wouldn’t make her sad again.

Lexa actually growled which made me jump “I regret not killing the witch that held me captive personally. He kept me there far too long.”

Her eyes were an eerie golden color and a million miles away.  I had to change subjects before things got out of hand. “On a lighter note; what is your biggest extravagance?”  I asked quickly.

Lexa’s eyes warmed then darkened once more. My doubts about her being fully human were starting to fade.  She smiled again, “My double chocolate caramel cake. I love to make it. Hunter and I could eat the whole thing in one sitting if we don’t watch it. He says I’ll make him fat, but really a fat dragon?” Lexa shook her head giggling slightly at the thought.

“Is there a word or phrase that you use too much?” I asked trying to get things moving again.

“Yes, oh… yes, yes,” Lexa moaned then she laughed some more.

I sighed trying not to think about what she was insinuating. “Alright Lexa, last question. Is there one skill or hobby you’d like to learn?”

“I would love to learn how to sing. My wolf can do it so beautifully, but I sound like crap. Hunter swears I sound like a cat in heat. It really could come in handy in the future.” Lexa looked perfectly innocent. I wondered if she was being serious or somehow referring to her previous answer.

“Well thank you Lexa that’s all I need.” She stood as I did and shook my hand. “By the way how do you know Sarah?”

“Her mother’s friend Rachel and I went to culinary school together. I heard she opened her own restaurant and is doing quite well.” I stared at her openly now. I met Rachel a time or two she was in her early fifties. She went to culinary school over 20 years ago. Lexa still looked like she just graduated.

There was a knock on the door distracting me. “That would be Hunter, was there anything else?” Lexa asked.

“No sorry, thanks again.” I walked her to the door and opened it. Waiting patiently outside was what looked like a male model. Hunter was over six feet tall with blonde hair and moss green eyes. I understood Lexa’s amusement about a fat dragon now. Every inch of Hunter’s exposed flesh was covered in muscle. He didn’t pay attention to me though. All he saw was Lexa. He wrapped his arm around her and said a polite hello and goodbye to me before they left. I closed the door wondering where I could meet a dragon. Then I caught myself. When did I start believing in dragons or werewolves?

Title:  Hunted: Dragons of the South  (Book 1)

Author: Rebecca Tran

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Hunted (Dragons of the South)

Book Blurb:

Hunter Silver was sent to Arizona to clean up the Southern Territory as their new Enforcer. After nearly a year on the job, things are finally falling into place. Life was ideal. That is until a starved female werewolf wanders into his life. Hunter’s dragon says mine before it ever meets Lexa. This has trouble written all over it. Can Hunter save the territory and Lexa or will he be forced to choose?

After waking up in a cage, Lexa Greene runs as far as she can before nearly collapsing from exhaustion. With her memory gone Lexa has no choice but to trust a handsome stranger. Lexa’s wolf wants Hunter before her human half ever realizes what she is. But Lexa can’t start anything until she’s pieced her life back together, or can she? Will Lexa risk it all for a chance at love or will she run again?

Excerpt:

Lexa watched Hunter across the table. She couldn’t take her eyes off him actually. Surely she’d met handsome men before. Why was the attraction to Hunter so strong? She wanted to hold his hand. Feel his skin on hers. Have his hands all over her. Taste his lips. Lexa felt the heat build between her thighs and tried to think about something else.

Lexa asked Hunter about the territories hoping to distract herself. He explained that there were four territories: north, south, east and west. Asher stayed in the east, his brother Chase the North, Mac was here in South and Jacob lead the west. Asher oversaw all the territories though, none of them would challenge him. Then there was Zachary Lee. He led the Asian dragons in the states. He only recently formed an alliance with Asher. Much to his chagrin, his daughter mated one of the northern dragons. Zachary’s daughter and her mate were responsible for killing the witch holding her.

Lexa still wanted to know why she was being held. What purpose it served. Hunter wouldn’t tell her though. He said he didn’t want to spoil the evening. Lexa didn’t either. She let the subject drop. It was the same reason she wasn’t asking about the wolves. Lexa knew she was supposed to be one of them, yet she knew nothing about them. All she felt was fear and anger when she thought about it. A low growl formed in her throat. She caught herself and looked up at Hunter. He only asked if something was bothering her. Lexa waved it off.

Hunter reached across the table and took Lexa’s hand. It was supposed to be comforting. Instead, his touch was electric. Lexa was thinking about things she shouldn’t again and pulled her hand back with a smile for him.

After dinner, it was still early. Hunter suggested a movie and Lexa was relieved. She wasn’t sure if she trusted herself to spend time with him alone at his house. Public places were a much safer option. Hunter drove them to an older theatre just outside town. She was a little overdressed but who cared. Women watched Hunter. It annoyed her. Couldn’t they see he was on a date? The growl was starting again, and Lexa swallowed it down. ‘He is ours.’ Lexa looked around for the source of the voice. She heard someone laugh.

“Something wrong?” Hunter asked her.

“Did you hear that?” Lexa whispered up to him. Hunter said he didn’t.

Only you can hear me, Lexa.’

Lexa jumped. Hunter pulled her close worried. “Why?”

I am your wolf, and Hunter is ours.’

“Shit,” Hunter looked down at her worried. “I thought maybe, just maybe you were wrong about me. But, no. I have some voice claiming she’s my wolf talking to me.” Lexa explained. Hunter chuckled. She smacked his chest. “It’s not funny.”

“At least she talks. Chase’s dragon is wicked smart, yet he refuses to speak. Well, he did until he took a human mate.” Hunter told her.

He paid for the tickets and walked Lexa to the concession line. “You talk about them like they are people,” Lexa remarked.

“They aren’t animals even though we call them our beasts. They are intelligent creatures. Each has their own personality and desires. They think, dream, love and feel sorrow. You’ll understand once you get to know your wolf.” Hunter assured her as they found their seats.

Lexa thought she wanted to see the movie. She paid attention for the first half. Then Hunter took her hand in his, and his thumb drew circles absently on her skin. It sent tingles up her arm. She cuddled in close resting her head on his shoulder. Hunter wrapped an arm around her. She could smell him. The delicious scent made the desire worse.

Hunter must have had the same problem. He bent down and kissed Lexa. She offered her tongue. Hunter’s lips parted for her as his arms pulled her closer. Lexa’s hands roved over the taut muscles under his cotton button up. She loved the feeling of him. He was strong, solid, and covered in muscle everywhere she touched. At that moment Hunter was letting her touch a lot of him.

****

Hunter loved kissing Lexa. It was unlike any other woman. She knew exactly how to tease his tongue with hers. When to tug on his lips. Where to put her hands. How he didn’t know, and he really didn’t care. If he didn’t stop soon though a whole theatre of people was going to get a show that wasn’t meant for public audiences.

Hunter pulled away, and Lexa pulled him back. Her hand pulled his hair just hard enough to prove she meant business. Hunter smiled against her lips. He was so turned on right now it was uncomfortable. She was worth it though. Hunter would let Lexa tease him any day. Her hand ran up his inner thigh. Hunter had to stop her now. He pulled away and resisted when she tried to start again.

Lexa was breathing heavy, and he smelled her desire clear as day even with the butter on the popcorn permeating his nose. She probably smelled his desire too, and it was urging her on. He leaned over and whispered in her ear asking if she wanted to go or stay. Even in the dim light, Hunter saw her cheeks flare red. Lexa said stay her wolf said go. Until they were on the same page, nothing was going to happen.

Hunter took her hand again and watched the movie. She let their hands rest in her lap for most of the movie. Occasionally, though she would move it to his and snuggle in close for a bit. Then she’d snatch a kiss and retreat to her side of the armrest. Hunter didn’t mind. He’d wait for Lexa as long as he needed to.

Meet My Character Week – Madam Giry

CHARACTER’S NAME: Madam Lise Giry

How did you find yourself in your current predicament/on your current adventure?Life is an adventure, of that I am certain. What led me here? A Ghost.

Years ago when I was a lonely and neglected bride I saw a travelling fair – of the sort the gipsies manage. There he was – this young man in a cage – like a beast. The fashion was for freaks – bearded women, dwarfs, those unfortunate souls God had touched with something not quite right. This man in a cage wore little more than rags, his face covered by a mask and his eyes had a hateful feral look but when he sang – heaven wept. Neither before nor since have I heard such a sound – it went directly to the soul and bared it before one – raw, weeping, glorious.

Then his keeper made him remove the mask. Such a face was revealed as the devil himself would turn from. Poor Erik. For that was the wretch’s name.

I did not know it then but an act of kindness would send my life and my heart along paths I never knew I could endure. He wept at kindness. A life of such woe that a simple Christian kindness brought this man to tears.

The caged devil – The Living Corpse – became a ghost, and an angel and our paths diverged for many years but I never forgot that music, and he never forgot the only kindness he was ever shown.

How many crimes have you committed? I sheltered a murderer, I aided his escape. I have been complicit in blackmail, theft, seduction – and I have sinned before God in thought and deed. I turned away from the Church, I loved a man who was not my husband, although I never committed adultery I thought about it.

How do you think others see you?  A stuffy, prim and proper dance mistress and seamstress. I know what the corps de ballet whisper about me. Some of the girls spend more time on their backs than dancing and I have seen what happens to those left with an unplanned burden. They are Séductrice! I am strict, but I am not stupid – those who leave due to pregnancy will end up at best a short term plaything for the rich patrons.

Are you resilient? Do you deal with change easily? How do you react? I’ve had to be resilient. My mother died when I was very young, my father died when I was just married, my husband’s family despised me, several of my children died, and I’ve been a widow for twenty years.

I would like to say God saw me through the hardest times, but I am unsure if that’s the truth. I dare say I deserve it.

If you could live your life again would you make the same choices? If I was married to Jules when I met Erik? Yes, I think so. The rational side of me says what kind of life could I have had with him? Always on the run, probably often afraid and hungry. Could I live with the things he’s done first hand? I do not know. The part of my soul that yearns to live in that music, for the Angel to sing for me, as he sang for her says I should have made the choice to have followed him.

What is the hardest choice you’ve had to make in the course of your adventures? What was the easiest? I have a daughter, I buried my other children, and then my husband. I had very little for a long time and then Erik arranged for me to come here. That was an easy choice. The hardest? I suppose not having the courage to say I would go with him when he left the barn so many years ago. Not having the courage to say what was in my heart. Turning aside when the bodies started mounting up, and having to stand by whilst he destroyed himself for that ingénue, Christine Daae.

What trait do you abhor most in yourself or others? Spite and shallowness.

Do you have any dirty secrets? Apart from the crimes, unrequited love, casting my Catholic upbringing aside, knowing who is behind the murders here and not informing the gendarmes? No, I can’t think of anything else.

Have you ever loved/been loved? I loved my husband Jules He was a decent man but he has been gone a long time. I loved my father, and I loved Erik. I believe Jules loved me. Did Erik love me? No, but he was kind to me – helped me when I was desperate and hungry – but he did not love me.  Perhaps the tragedy at the Opera house could have been averted had he loved me, not her.

Do you believe in a god/s? I was raised a Catholic but in the dark nights when I hear Erik’s music in my dreams and see that awful, terrible visage given to him by God I wonder at such a fickle deity – a god that took my children from me and left us to starve. I have sinned and so perhaps that is my punishment but as each year passed my faith dwindled.

Why should we read about your adventures? My story is a tragedy; a tale of desperate love, death and music. Ours was a strange friendship that spanned the decades and sustained two terribly lonely souls and we had that night in the barn, so many long years ago.

Madam Giry features in

Tears and Crimson Velvet

Madam Giry finds herself embroiled in the tragedy unfolding at the Opera house; mystery and murder stalk the corridors and, it is said, a ghost haunts the place. Giry knows the truth, for she recalls the caged man she met so many years ago. This is her story, their story.

When murder and mystery begin at the Opera House one woman knows who is behind it, and what really lies beneath the mask. Secrets, lies and tragedy sing a powerful song in this ‘might have been’ tale.

A short, tragic tale based on characters from Phantom of the Opera.

A Legacy of the Mask Tale.

Meet my Character Week – Father Vincent Paul #Fantasy #Paranormal #Meetmycharacter

CHARACTER’S NAME: Birth name Sebastian – but I go by Father Vincent Paul now.

–Who are you? (Give a brief description of yourself) I am a Catholic priest.

–Tell us a little about your world I live in South Dakota, out in the middle of nowhere. I shepherd several parish churches, the small kind that attract photographers from the big cities, looking for images of better days. I wouldn’t know what days those were, however.

–Does your world/area have different races/people? Do they get on? They seem to, but they do not. Several tribes of Dakota Sioux live nearby. I minister to them, but many of them do not attend services. There is a dam being built where their homes currently stand, and they are being flooded out. I can’t blame them for not having a properly Christian attitude, although it disappoints me. There are Franciscan monks who run a nearby Indian school, where the children are sent to learn how to integrate with White society. I don’t think either set of those folks get on, either. And then there are the local farmers. No, all in all, I would say that despite an appearance of peace and quiet, nobody gets on, as you say.

–How do you think others see you? I hope they think I’m a good priest, humble, and with a sense of humor that defrays hot tempers. But I doubt it.

–Are you a likeable person? In my heart, I know I am not.

–Do you see yourself as a ‘good’ person? Some days I do. Those are the days I generally disappoint myself.

–If you could live your life again would you make the same choices? I would not. I would have married the nun that I fell in love with while I was in seminary, and turned aside from my vows. Then perhaps I would have been elsewhere when tragedy struck.

–Tell us about your family. I could speak for days of them and still not explain enough. I suppose you could call us the royalty of the prairie. My father holds himself as such, in his heart of hearts. There are nine of us children, all but the youngest, Jerome, a grown man. Of the three of us nearest in age, there is myself, a priest; Aloysius, a rancher, and Theodore, another rancher. If I am a clever man, then Aloysius is a charming one. Theodore is the strongest. We are all three of us caught between integrity and the way things are done.

–How does your society deal with those on the edges? Do you approve of this? With drowning their homes under a hundred feet of water, apparently. No, I do not approve.

–Do you believe in magic? Sadly, I do. I was curious when I shouldn’t have been, and read a book I should not.

–Why should we read about your adventures? So that you can avoid making the same sad mistakes yourselves.

Meet My Character Week – Justin the Wizard #Fantasy #Meetmycharacter

Author’s name:  J. K. Lutes

Link to book or books where this character appears.

CHARACTER’S NAME:  Justin

Who are you? (Give a brief description of yourself)

I am a White Wizard, so I have mastered the four elements and I can command plants, animals, magical creatures, and dragons.  A dragon sired one of my ancestors, so I also possess Dragon Magic, so I can use the breath weapon of a dragon.  I have already mastered breathing fire, ice, and lightning.  I can also smell gold, become invisible, and transform myself into an elemental cloud.

How did you find yourself in your current predicament/on your current adventure?

My father told me stories every night before I fell asleep, and my favorite story of them all was about the fall of our ancestor’s ancient city.  The fall of the city was awful, but it was my ancestor who led the survivors to safety and founded their new home.  I heard the story one last time on the day I faced the trials to see what sort of magic I would learn.  When I finished my training, I traveled back to the ancient city to recover magical weapons that were lost during the attack.  Not only will I have to face the creatures that now inhabit the city, but the journey to get there is filled with perils of its own.

Who are your companions?

My friend, Grace, accompanied me on my journey, so that she could summon animals to scout the city for us.  Alyssa, the wizard who taught me plant magic, has come along to recover an ancient crown lost by the faeries during the fall of the city.  Lauren, the wizard who taught me gold magic, has come along to recover a dragon lance lost by her most famous ancestor.  And finally, Niall, another White Wizard, has come along to recover Cumhacht, the sword of power.

What is the government structure of your world? Are you happy with this or do you strive to change the status quo?

My city is ruled by a council of wizards, one wizard from each of the wizard sects of my city.  While they seem to have the best interest of the city at heart, they seek personal fame and recognition.  They are also stuck in the past and refuse to allow my people to grow beyond their current constraints for fear that they will lose their power and influence.

Do you have a mentor? Tell us about them.

My mentor is Riordan, and he is a White Wizard.  He is a distant cousin of mine and both of our families descend from Lucinor, one of the most famous White Wizards in the history of my people.

What trait do you abhor most in yourself or others?

During the planning stage of our quest, a wizard who should have accompanied us sought riches rather than help.  And while on my adventure, I noticed that one of my companions was willing to put his own needs above the needs of everyone else.  His selfishness could have led to our capture, or worse, our demise.  Selfishness is the trait that I most abhor.

Tell us about your family.

My father, Jerome, is a Red Wizard.  He can control fire, but unlike most other Reds, he can also control air.  He is the Master of the Great Forge and the weapons that he produces are prized above all others.   My mother was a Gold Wizard, so she could control dragons, but she disappeared when I was twelve.

How does your society deal with those on the edges? Do you approve of this?

My city recognizes nine types of Wizards.  Red Wizards control fire, Blues control water, Greys control air, Blacks control the earth, Greens control plants, Browns control animals, Silvers control most magical animals, and Golds control dragons.  White Wizards possess the ability to use all eight of the basic types of magic.  Within the last hundred years some wizards have found that they possess the ability to use more than one of the basic forms of magic, but not all eight.  Those wizards have been labeled anomalies and have been encouraged not to use more than one type of magic.  I do not approve of this practice; I believe that a wizard should explore all of his or her powers and expand their knowledge as much as possible.

Do you have a best friend/worst enemy?

My best friend is Grace, she is a Brown Wizard, which means she can control the animals of this world.  She is following in the footsteps of her mother, who passed along her love of animals.  She has two animal companions:  a golden eagle named Spiorad (Spirit), and a mongoose named Diabhal (Devil).

Do you believe in magic?

Of course I believe in magic, I have used it most of my life.  From an early age I was able to cast spells that most other students could not.  An older student gave me a spell to polymorph inanimate objects, and I got in trouble when I scared my mother by transforming a stick into a snake.

Meet My Character Week – Kaine Martin – #Suspense #Paranormal

CHARACTER’S NAME: Kaine Martin

  1. Who are you? (Give a brief description of yourself)

Hello, my name is Kaine, and I’m an anthropologist. Rarely people notice me, mostly because I don’t like to be in the spotlight.

I’m very shy, and I’m never confident about whether people might like me or not. This side of my character leads me generally to be mistaken for a person who gets above himself, as it happened with Nora, one of my colleagues.

  1. Who are your companions?

Well, first of all, there is Mark. He’s the other side of my sky, the man I love with all my strengths.

He’s completely different from me, self-confident, charming, and sexy as hell. The typical guy who’s always in the spotlight.

We complete each other, and I believe we were just meant to be together.

Then, there is Jason Murdock. He is an anthropologist who was trying to track an elusive and mysterious tribe in Africa. Eight years ago, he was considered missing, until one day, I received an email from him. That message changed my life forever, giving me a precious lead to continue his research and be the one to bring the tribe to the spotlight.

  1. Do you have a mentor? Tell us about them.

From the time I reached Jason to Africa, my life reached a sudden turn, and with so many things going the wrong way, I ended up into a curse.

Yes, I know it sounds crazy, and sometimes I find it also hard to believe it myself, but it’s true.

The most important mentor has been also my tormentor, the high priestess Akuna-Ra.

She helped me to release my inner power to communicate with the entities of the underworld, and opened my eyes to a brand-new vision of the Universe.

You won’t believe its complexity, not at least until you start to see the reality from a completely different perspective.

  1. If you could live your life again would you make the same choices?

Absolutely, because even the wrong one, the one that cursed me, turned out to be a blessing.

  1. What is the hardest choice you’ve had to make in the course of your adventures? What was the easiest?

The hardest choice was perhaps leaving for an undefined period to search the tribe in Africa.

I just started my relationship with Mark, and I was afraid this long period away from each other could undermine our future together.

The easiest choice was choosing to remain in Africa, and propose Mark to move there with me.

If you are going to read about my adventure, I’m sure you will also be tempted to leave everything behind.

  1. Would you die for those you love? Would you kill for them?

I don’t believe in violence, and I don’t believe that dying for someone I love would make things easy. They will mourn my absence and the pain would be unbearable.

I would rather try to solve every situation in a less dramatic way.

The same is for killing; there must be a better way than to kill or be killed by someone.

Maybe I might summon the forces of the underworld.

  1. Have you ever loved/been loved?

Yes, I love, and also I am loved.

I fell in love with many guys before, but only Mark made me feel special.

You know, when everybody started to believe I was dead, he ran to Africa even to bring back my corpse. He’d never accept my death without having the certainty.

  1. Tell us about your family.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to be said.

I was raised by my mother alone, and I don’t have any siblings.

My father died shortly after I was born, and I have no memory of him. Many times, I fantasize about how it would have been to have him close to me.

I wonder about what kind of person he was and whether he’d been proud of me like my mother was.

Mom has been for me more than just family, she supported me, and even after her death, she returned as a ghost to help me make the right decision, guiding me to the right path. She also tried to guide Mark when he didn’t know where to search for me.

  1. Do you believe in magic?

Of course, I do! My whole life revolves between this world and the underworld. Without magic, I could never keep the balance between them, and believe me, it’s a hard job!

  1. Why should we read about your adventure?

Because it’s so crazy that sometimes I also feel impossible that things like that could happen, particularly to me.

Before this adventure started, I never considered magic being something real.

It was just mumbo-jumbo, something that shamans used because they didn’t have scientific knowledge. Only now, I understand how wrong I was, and I thank Akuna-Ra for introducing me to magic and release those dormant powers in me.

Therefore, if you think magic doesn’t exist, this is a book to open your eyes and entertain you with a fascinating new point of view.

If you, instead, believe in magic, this is going to be a compelling read to find out something more about it.

Together with this, you will discover the powerful beauty of the African Rainforest and the amazing people living around it.

So, what are you waiting for? Come to find me there, I’ll be waiting between one spell and another, trying to stay alive.

*Optional – short piece on why you chose to showcase this character and what draws you to him/her/it/them. Is there a basis in reality for this character – for example.

I chose this character and this particular book because there’s a lot about the places I visited, and for which I fell in love.

Africa is a very diverse continent, and every country has its peculiar beauties that draw me there. Kaine is a bit like me, shy and introverted, although I don’t have any special mediumistic power, I’m attracted by everything belonging to magic rites and supernatural forces.

Swift Six Character Interview – Acionna #Fantasy #Mythictales

#Swiftsix #fantasy #talesoferana #Meetacharacter

mythic-fb-bannerName: Acionna

Which book/world do you live in?

I live in the Jagged Peak mountains, they are in the world called Erana by those who live there. I am in a book? I know of books and lore. Then am I not real? – I feel real, and the mountains around me seem real. Is it, perhaps, that I am real here, and you are the myth, you are the imaginary?

Tell us about yourself: (Name, race/species, etc.)

I am an ancient elemental, a Goddess to some. Born of the mountain, and the pounding waterfalls when the world was young and the magic free. It was so long past I could not tell you how many years or centuries of your time. Once there were many of my kind – creatures of magic and wild places but the magic was chased away, corrupted and sickened and many of us fell, or hid, or faded. Now I am a myth, a legend told around the fire and a drop of blood here and there in lineages old and noble. The Plague came and everything changed. The land changed, the magic changed.

My myths say:

‘Many creatures were born when the magic was wild and free. Guardians of the wild places they would become, and when there were mortals to believe they would become gods; for those whose lives end often seek out those who endure. Acionna had been born of the rock, the water and the snow. She was a child of all and none, a child of the raw magic of the earth and streams. So it was the elemental walked among the rock and water, a goddess of sorts.’

My hair is white like the fresh-fallen snow, and my skin blue-black like the beloved mountain which spawned me. To you I would appear naked. Elementals feel no shame of their bodies, nor a need to cover themselves. Shame is a mortal emotion. But even elementals may love, and experience loneliness. For everything which lives craves company of some sort. I do not fear death, but I do fear this awful loneliness lasting until the mountain falls to dust.

I’m an adventurer – why should I recruit you to accompany me?

I have had my adventures, I have warred, and lost all save myself. I have walked the mountain paths and fought with monsters and men who would seek to kill every last trace of magic. Why should I wish to adventure again?

If I were to consent I would bring you elemental magic, of the oldest sort. The Power of the elementals, the Power of nature and the furious waters and mighty peaks.

Tell us about your companions?  How do they see you?

I have none. My mate is long dead, now nothing but a statue and even I cannot undo the curse. My daughter is gone, fallen to wicked magic and I walk these peaks alone. Sometimes the trolls come and bring offerings but they see me not. For I know now that mortals and immortals should not mix.

What’s your most heroic exploit to date?

We fought the Sal tribe, with their wicked fae-bought magic. There were no winners in that war, but I cleansed the mountain of its taint of stolen and bargained dark sorcery. No more did the trolls bargain with the fae.

What’s your greatest failure?

We lost the war. The Plague came anyway and the land was blighted. My mate was killed, by allied tribe scattered and the Relic of the Moon was lost.

Where do you think you’ll be in a decade?

To an immortal time is nothing. I was born of magic and mountains, and with luck, I will fade when they do. The magic is hunted, it is purged, and it is tormented but magic cares not. Magic is and always shall be wild and free. The Order of Witch-Hunters are mortals, they rose and they will fall sooner or later. I have seen the tribes of men come and go like the seasons, but through them, magic remains. I concede it hides and shows itself in places of mystery and crafty ways but the magic is as old as the land and will not die completely.

Do you have a great love? (This could be a person/trait/item)

Talin Var – Hirik prince of the Var tribe of trolls. Is it wise for an elemental to love a mortal? No, usually it ends in tragedy, but love is a sister to magic and she finds her way when one expects or desires it not. Love cannot be controlled or denied. Talin was brave, strong and honourable and he gave his life for his people.

My love for Talin persists, even after so many years.

Swift Six Character Interview – Keo of the Sword #Fantasy

KingdomofMagicians 500x750

Character Name: Keo of the Sword

Which book/world do you live in? The formerly united Kingdom of Lamaira; more specifically, South Lamaira, which is controlled by the Magicians.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? My greatest strength is my loyalty to my friends and my willingness to keep going no matter how hard the going gets.

My greatest weakness is my naivety, because I grew up in a forest largely isolated from the larger world, so there is much about the greater world that I don’t know about.

Name three important people/creatures/institutions in your world (such as lovers, pets, government institutions, leaders, gods etc). The Good King is an important figure in my world, or was, before his death, because he founded the Kingdom of Lamaira and was the one who sealed away the demons who oppressed us.

And, of course, there are the Magicians who rule over my home land of South Lamaira. Unfortunately, they often use their magic to benefit themselves, rather than help the people they rule over.

There is also my childhood friend, Nesma, who is a Magician herself and lives in the capital city of South Lamaira. I have not seen her in over a year since she left our part of the country to become a Magician, but I have urgent news I need to share with her as soon as possible, so I will probably go visit her sometime soon.

What does ‘heroism’ mean to you? Being willing to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

What do you think of your ‘creator’? I think he’s a good man, although I don’t understand why he’s forced me to leave my forest to go on a quest across my country to warn my country’s rulers of the return of the demons. I can only hope he has a larger plan than I am aware of, because I do not feel particularly good about defeating the demons.

Give us your favourite piece of advice: Always show respect to your local Magician. Not only are they a rightful authority over your town or area, but they also know many mystical arts and spells which they can you to make your life hell.

Character Interview Number Twenty-Nine – Dii’Athella

Tell Us About Yourself
Name(s): Dii’Athella, or just Dii. I’m told it means Flower of the Dawn in the Elvish language.

Age? I’m not sure. About 25 summers or so, I think.  I was never allowed ‘birthdays’ as you call them. Elves live longer than humans, even in captivity, so for my people I am quite young. Unless, of course, hardship or disease takes us. I’ve heard of elves living several hundred years but that is very rare these days. There is magic which prolongs life, but it is little known, hard to cast and the price paid very high.

Please tell us a little about yourself. I’m an elf, and a Forbidden. In the land of Erana that means I am a slave, or at least I was. Elves have no rights, we are property. We have no recourse to law, our culture is nothing but fragments of a lost glory, and we cannot move freely. I am also a sorceress. Although that, too, is illegal. The Order of Witch-Hunters deem magic to be wicked, and elves to be the bringers of the greatly feared Plague. I’m a mage, my blood flows with magic. Even in hiding that is so. Either one is magical or one isn’t. I cannot change that any more than my Elven birth.

In my former life I was used as the plaything of rich men. I was given or sold to them, to pleasure them. My Keeper thought it amusing to have an educated slave – it brought me even lower I suppose. Literacy is not common, especially amongst elves. The Order of Witch-Hunters don’t encourage knowledge and people thinking for themselves. This leads to questions, and the seeking of answers about the world. For them, this is bad. I love to learn. Ignorance helps to divide us. Knowledge is power.

Now I am a healer, herbalist and a scholar. I am also a rebel and a traitor, or so you’d say. That is correct yes, when one fights against the established rulers? If so, then I am proud of it.

There is more, but you’ll have to follow my adventures to discover that.

Describe your appearance in 10 words or less. Red curly hair, tattoos, slender, beautiful (so I’m told).

Do you have a moral code? If so what is it? Morals in Erana are not quite the same as in your world. We have love, honour, friendship, trust and all those things but there is no law, save what the Order decide. It is not law for it serves not the people, it serves the Order and slavers. I am, by my birth, my magic and my race a criminal and so I break what passes for law in our land.

I have killed, although I try and avoid it as I am a healer. I have stolen to feed myself, although I am not sure apples count. I have harboured criminals, I have lied and I have stood by whilst others died. I have led people into traps, but they were Witch-Hunters and deserved it. Morality is relative to one’s position. I cannot afford to follow the ‘moral code’ the Order espouse. I spent enough time as a slave, and in the Order dungeons to know that.

I am devoted to my family – my real family – not the bastard who stole me and raised me in his house.

I am kind, and I will defend my friends before myself. I like to help people. Archos told me it is because I was so eager to please as though not to be beaten, or worse. A lonely child longing to be liked. I have no idea if this is the truth but I suppose it explains a lot. It was a way to protect myself and now is habit.

I think I am trustworthy and discrete. When one’s life is a lie then one gets used to keeping secrets.

Would you kill for those you love? Yes. I would also kill for a cause I love. Freedom.

Would you die for those you love? Yes, and technically I have. Or close enough.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?

Weaknesses:

I don’t think I am very brave.

I am emotional – I suppose it is because of my earlier life. There are all these awful memories in my head and I can get upset about things. Archos says I am strong, a survivor. I don’t see it. Sometimes my emotions get the better of me.

My magic.

Strengths:

I am clever and resourceful. I had to be.

I’m kind and except for the Order I don’t tend to hate.

I learn fast.

My magic.

Do you have any relationships you prize above others? Why? Archos. He saved my life. He is kind, clever, fascinating and unbelievably desirable. Mages tend to be passionate and we are. He does not treat me simply as another elf. Finally my life has some worth.

Olek – Olek is like a brother to me. I trust him with my life. He’s amusing, he is loyal to Archos. They have a special friendship, very close with much shared between them. He was with Archos long before I came to live in Tremellic and they value the friendship. Thus so do I. Olek is very complex. One of those people who is not what he appears.

Ozena, my dear friend. She has also suffered much at the hands of slavers. But she is feisty and speaks her mind, far more than I. I suppose I was used to not being allowed to, or no one caring what I thought. Ozena is much bolder. When we first met she stood up to Lord Archos, challenged him on points and won the argument. Not many people would dare, or if they did dare they would most likely regret it. Archos still chuckles about it. I think he likes the challenge.

Do you like animals? Do you have any pets/animal companions? I have a raven, well to be precise she’s a Spirit Bird – a familiar you might call her. Ethnii chooses to be with me and I am honoured. She’s named after the Goddess of the Sky. She has some magic of her own, and she is very clever. The Shaman Kherak Var gave her to me, as a protector.

There are several horses too, plus goats, chickens, and such like in the manor grounds and the paddock.

I was never allowed a pet in my old life. My….foster brother had dogs but I was not allowed to pet them or make a fuss. I used to put crumbs down for the mice and sometimes the squirrels would come to my window but they don’t count, I suppose.

Can you remember something from your childhood which influences your behaviour? How do you think it influences you? *Looks sad.

My childhood? You want to know about that? It was difficult… cold, frightening and devoid of much love. Malana, my Keeper’s mistress tried to be kind and protect me but she was often as frightened of him, or sometimes would do nothing so she would not be beaten.  I was often hungry and I was used….

I never got to know the parents who brought me into the world.

Do you have any phobias? Being returned to the Witch-Hunter dungeons. I’d rather die than return there.
Please give us an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.I know Shadowplay – at least a bit. Not many people do.
Tell Us About Your World

Please give us a little information about the world in which you live. Erana is a world of magic. But it is a world in which magic is forbidden. It is a world of inequality, martial law and prejudice. Yet it is a world of possibilities if one is brave enough or fortunate enough to find them. It’s an old world, full of surprises and strange creatures. Parts of it are very beautiful. Tremellic is a secluded valley close to the Jagged Peak Mountains, it is very fertile. The plains I have not seen very much. Then, of course there’s the Shimmering Forest.  The forest elves say it is alive, I don’t mean in the usual way, I mean sentient and cunning. There are many myths about the ancient forest, not all of them are simply myths.

The Tree of Always – the oldest tree in that part of the forest is supposed to be the mother of all the apple trees which grow. The tree is so old it has seen the elves rise and fall, it has seen the world change. Is it really the oldest? Who knows, there is nothing living to disprove it.  There are many lost magics and lost creatures – hiding from the scourge of magic until such time as it is safe to return.

Does your world have religion or other spiritual beliefs? If so do you follow one of them? Please describe (briefly) how this affects your behaviour. Officially not really. The humans nod in the direction of the gods when it suits. There are temples to Syltha – the goddess of healing and the gods in general but it is more a vague belief, hedging one’s bets you’d call it. Racial memories perhaps.

The trolls are the most spiritual – they have gods and spirits for pretty much everything. Our neighbours, the Var tribe, worship the Goddess of the Sky, called Ethnii’a by them or Kal Rean by the trolls. I suppose you could say she’s the mother goddess. She’s powerful and capricious. Her children are the sun and the moon.

Archos is….well that would be telling, let’s just say he honours to Sky Goddess above others.

There are minor gods, demigods and nymphs. These are, or were, magical beings from the early times. There are but a few left and those in hiding. We found a nymph, Oeliana in the Shimmering Forest. She guards the forest pools.  There are elementals too. Creatures of magic which are the essence of the world, the essence of magic. Once they were common, but even an elemental can be hunted and slain. Once they were worshipped and honoured, now if they are remembered at all it is with fear.

I think the forest elves have many local spirits and gods, but as I’ve said their culture is almost gone so it’s hard to tell. The city elves cling on to the old beliefs – they have little except faith and hope.

The Witch-Hunters don’t encourage belief in the gods – that’s close to magic for them, but I’ve been told individuals may belief, all be it vaguely. The gods exist, or existed. Acknowledgement is another matter.

Does it affect my behaviour? Of course. I’m a mage, we KNOW the gods are real, we KNOW the magic is real and won’t be tamed. We tend to follow the Lady of the Skies and the goddess of healing. I’m a light mage so of course I honour Syltha too. It pays to honour the local gods – after all one may need their assistance. Magic is magic.

Name and describe a food from your world. Once we had roasted Salamander. Olek eats anything so he liked it. No one else did. Giant Salamanders spit acid and they are disgusting and slimy. Not the best meal. We didn’t have much choice. I learned long ago one will eat anything if one is starving.

We have many forms of wine – some from grapes from the warmer lands, and other fruits such as blackberries, rosehips, and elderberries.  There are cider orchards too – both pears and apples.

The trolls eat a seed bread. It is much flatter and harder than other bread, like a cracker from your world. Wheat doesn’t grow that well in their lands but there are the hardy mountain grasses which provide a kind of flour.  It is easy to store and doesn’t go stale.

Ozena tells me her village ate mainly what could be gathered or farmed from their goats. Milk, goat cheese and yoghurts. They have hunters too – so wild pig, deer and birds are on the menu.

Tremellic has many farms – sheep and goats, pigs for bacon and a few cows for their milk. We have makers of cheese, a few hunters now and Archos is contemplating getting some deer to add to the food stores.

Our housekeeper makes divine honey cats. Oats, butter, honey and sometimes fruit. She has a secret recipe.

Does your world have magic? If so how is it viewed in your world? You need ask after all I’ve told you?

Does your world have different races of people? If so do they get on with one another? The humans blame the elves for the Plague, for the ills of society and for, well, being elves. The trolls tend to keep themselves to their mountain villages but do sometimes trade. It’s not that they don’t like the other races, just most humans either haven’t seen one or have odd misconceptions about their ways. Foolish ideas such as trolls eat people. They don’t, well not unless they get REALLY hungry. Something about a seven foot tall horned warrior who can shapeshift into a bear or a trollish shaman who can predict the future seems to worry many people. A lot worries the humans.

The elves are generally too oppressed to trust anyone much. The humans enslave them, and the trolls are distant. Once the elves, trolls and humans worked together.

Tremellic is probably more forward thinking than anywhere else. That is Lord Archos’ doing. He sees the advantage of alliances with trolls and elves. What’s that phrase on your world? ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’ The Order are strong, they rule by force after all – so any alliances against them is valuable.

On rare occasions trolls will marry an elf or human. There are a few half trolls around. Half-elves are common – usually an elven mother – willing or not. Half-elves are slaves as much as elves.

Then there are the fae and the keres… Which shouldn’t exist but do.

Meet My Character Blog Tour

I have been invited by JC Mells to participate in this blog tour, discussing a character from a work in progress or recently published work.

JC is the author of the Pierced Series.

Website/blog: http://www.jcmells.com

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/J-C-Mells/428567953902490?ref=hl

Do check out her blog to learn about her characters and those of the other authors involved. This is going to be an ongoing blog tour so follow the chain to find some wonderful new friends.

*****

Here are the questions to answer about a main character from a WIP (work in progress) or recently published work:

1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?

The main character of my current Work in Progress is Mirandra Var, she is a female troll, and daughter of the shaman. I guess that makes her a troll princess. Troll society is matriarchal so the women are in charge.  She is, of course, fictional.

2) When and where is the story set?

The novels are all set in the fictional fantasy world of Erana, which is a medieval-style world, loosely based on Europe at the time.  In the context of the books this is set roughly 18-24 months after the events of book I and several months after the events of book II.

3) What should we know about him/her?

Mirandra is a half-troll. Although to all intents and purposes she counts as a full-blood troll.  As I said the Trollkind are matrilineal so it would be her mother’s line which is important. Mirandra is the daughter of the Shaman, Kherak, and her father is Lord Archos, Magelord of Tremellic, although this only comes to light in book II.  She is young for a troll, about thirty one or so, when she leaves for her adventure – her Proving.  Trolls are generally attractive, intelligent and cultured, unlike most of that race portrayed elsewhere.  She is clever, brave, but she has doubts and fears like everyone else and this book is about her, her journey and what it means to be a Shaman.

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

Mirandra is heir to her mother, but in order to rule she must undergo a Proving – a test or series of tests to prove she is worthy. These tend to be different for every Shamania – the heir apparent – and each one carries substantial risk. One of her ancestors was crippled and another died during the Proving. There is more to the adventure – some kin in the far hills are missing and Mirandra must discover what has become of her distant cousins. Not only that but they encounter unexpected hostility from the locals, creatures which should not exist and far more questions than answers.  What is discovered and what is lost will be important in later books and the overarching plot of the series.

5) What is the personal goal of the character?

To survive her Proving, to find her kin, to lead her people wisely in the upheaval to come.

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

The Stolen Tower.

At present there is not much about that book on my blog but the series is listed.  Once the first draft is finished I will post up a lot more.

7) When can we expect the book to be published?

By the end of 2014.

Thaddeus White
Mini-bio:
Thaddeus White is an author of comedy and ‘serious’ fantasy, and has released three books to date.
He enjoys reading classical history and fantasy in his spare time, as well as watching and betting on Formula 1 (with mixed results).
Sir Edric’s Temple is his first comedy, and the second (Sir Edric’s Treasure) is well underway and will hopefully be released later this year.
