Welcome to Regina M. Joseph

Please tell us a little about yourself.  I’m new to writing fiction, although for many years I’ve written extensively in my practice as a business lawyer. I live in Toledo, Ohio with my husband. I graduated from The Ohio State University.

Please tell us a little about your writing – for example genre, title, etc. The Alterran Legacy Series is comprised of four books: Colony Earth (October 2012), Khamlok (March 2013), Resurrection (in publication), and Redemption (for publication in 2014).  It is science fiction/fantasy.

Where can readers find your book? Soft cover and Kindle versions are available through Amazon, and the ebook is available in other venues, such as Barnes & Noble.

How long have you been writing and what made you choose the genre in which you write? I began writing fiction because I had an avid interest in ancient, ancient history, most of which is only available in what people call mythology. I began envisioning the stories, particularly the Sumerian ones, as plausible descriptions of real events seen through the eyes of humans. Why would an advanced civilization colonize Earth and attempt to nurture primitive humans?  What was happening on their home world? And so, we have the Alterran Legacy Series.

Who or what are your inspirations/influences? For fiction writing, my primary influences are Kim Stanley Robinson and George R.R. Martin.

Can you name a positive experience from your writing and a negative one? The positive experience is getting great comments from readers, as well as when Colony Earth won the 2012 eLit Award in science fiction/fantasy. The negative is the uphill battle in marketing my work as a new writer.

With the rise of e-books do you still publish in print as well? Is this medium important and why? It’s important to have print books available, because many people still prefer them. I prefer print books for the ones I care the most about. It’s wonderful to be surrounded in your home by finished books!

Do you listen to music or watch TV whilst you write?   No, to TV.  Many times, I listen to music.

What experiences can a book provide that a movie or video game cannot? Books engage the imagination far more than movies and video games!

What advice would you give new writers? Network with people who will be willing to post reviews and publicize your book.

Most authors also like to read, what books do you enjoy? I like science fiction and fantasy books like the Game of Thrones, Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time, Dune, as well as fine literature and ancient history. I read science books and magazines, too. I absolutely love Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy, and I love Ayn Rand.

Can you give us a silly fact about yourself? As a kid, I kept an emergency sack of books by the door in case of fire.
