But she can resist his charms, right?

Author Bio:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men’s room toilet (and he isn’t a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).

She lives in New England with her husband and three children where she is the only person in the household with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

Excerpt (PLEASE CHOOSE ONLY ONE TO USE WITH YOUR POST):

#1 – Shopping for a Billionaire’s Wife

“Seriously, Dec? We just fled a thousand-person wedding in our honor and all you can think about is getting above the garter?”

His confusion just increases. “Yes,” he answers honestly.

I throw my hands in the air, whacking some sort of strap that stretches behind my shoulder. It begins to flap in the wind as we race toward whatever landing strip we’ll use to disembark. As it fut-fut-futs against my veil, I realize the wind isn’t whipping the long, white lace behind me. When we crawled into the helicopter and Declan put on my harness, he tucked my veil in.

      I love him so much.

#2 – It’s Always Complicated

“Who do I get to marry, Mama? Papa or Daddy?” No one had taught Jillian to call her fathers by different names. And none of the three of them could pinpoint when she’d started calling Mike “Daddy” and Dylan “Papa”, but the names had stuck. Somehow, Jillian had instinctively known they were distinct, separate fathers with different identities. She never confused Daddy for Papa or vice versa. Dylan’s father was Grandpa.

Her only grandpa. She only had Dylan’s parents to fill the ‘grand’ role. Laura’s mom was dead and her dad long gone. Mike’s mom and dad still had no relationship with him, and he wanted to keep it that way.

Until two months ago, Laura had respected that.

Something about the whole wedding process—even if she couldn’t legally wed both Dylan and Mike—had triggered a sentimentality in her that made her weepy every time she looked at the children. Weddings were supposed to be sprawling affairs, with loads of extended family present to celebrate, the three of them had only Dylan’s family.

      That was it.

And while his parents and his siblings were great, there was still a hole. Sometimes, Laura would watch Jillian sleeping and wonder if her own mother had done the same, watching a tiny Laura in the depths of her dreams. Did her mom stroke her hair from her forehead and marvel at the miracle of her own love? Did she feel what Laura felt for Jillian, Aaron and Adam? In the quiet moments of the night, when all the chaos had settled down into slumber and the children twisted their tiny bodies in their sheets, limbs flung hither and yon, all-too-often tucked in between her, Mike and Dylan in the enormous double-king bed that they had created, she pondered.

Maybe every mother felt the way Laura did.

#3 – Tasty (all-new novella)

“You look extraordinary,” Will whispers in my ear as the slow, sensual lyrics taper off into the final notes of a beautiful love song.  We’re dancing, my cheek against his shoulder, and I am breathing all the breaths.

Every woman should have this at their wedding. Their perfect wedding.

We’ve pulled it off, Will and I. Five bridesmaids, five groomsmen, one mother of the bride, one father of the bride, one mother of the groom, one father of the groom – and one big, new extended family.

Color coordination to the point of perfect alignment.

Ratios of food that create culinary masterpieces in each individual mouth.

      My sister’s artisanal Manchego cheese.

My best friends, all happy, all at peace with their perfect partners.

This wedding couldn’t be more exquisite, and now the ante is about to be upped because the reception is almost over and it is time to head to our cottage rental.

A gift from my best friend, Perky, who booked it for us before our flight to Los Angeles.

No, we’re not honeymooning in L.A. That’s just a pit stop, an overnight before the real deal.

      Fiji.

That’s right. We’re spending our honeymoon in Fiji paradise.

“Need some water?” he asks, making me smile as I nod, because he’s tracking me. Watching out for me. We’re in symbiosis mode, and it’s a delight to have someone who cares so much that he notices my state. As he walks over to the bar, I watch, mesmerized.

      He’s mine.

      All mine.

She’s untouchable now, and it’s not her fault.

Resolved to branch out and find a way to have a life with a partner, children, meaning, and free from being a love pariah in a town devoted to it, she decides to leave her beloved Love You, Maine—where every day is Valentine’s Day—to find a bigger dating pool.

Excerpt (PLEASE CHOOSE ONLY ONE TO USE WITH YOUR POST):

#1

Colleen’s crush on her brother’s best friend had started in eleventh grade and ended, well…

      Never.

      It had ended never.

Which was why she drove two hours and ten minutes each way, totally out of her way, to pick him up at the Manchester airport today.

“Doesn’t matter,” she muttered to herself as she made the big loop around the arrivals section of the airport, half an eye out for him, the other half on her phone, waiting for Moore’s text. “Tim’s an anomaly. Not getting my hopes up,” she added, as if being down on herself would magically make some other part of her life work.

Like Moore appearing so they could get home ahead of the big snowstorm the radio announcers couldn’t shut up about.

Ever since she was a junior in high school and he was a freshman, she’d found herself transfixed by the sight of him, complete in his presence and yet in a constant state of yearning for more.

      For Moore.

#2

Pulling her close, he tried to warm her. They were on the floor, about three feet from the edge of an unmade bed.

“Colleen!” he said sharply. She blinked rapidly, then squeezed his arm.

“I’m not shivering,” she said slowly, slurring. “Nee’ to ge’ warm.”

“I’m trying,” he said, looking at the fire, which thankfully was showing signs of catching. Standing, he scanned the room. A small trunk served as a coffee table, in front of two wood-frame chairs with cheap vinyl cushions.

The chance there were blankets in that trunk was good.

His attention pinged between the trunk and Colleen.

      “Sit up,” he ordered her.

      “Can’t.”

If he kept her talking, everything would be fine.

“Maybe you just cursed yourself,” he told her, trying to get her goat, get a rise out of her, anything to keep her talking.

      “Huh?”

“Third Date Colleen. Never thought you’d end up in your own ER after a third date.” He lifted the lid of the trunk.

She blew a laugh through her nose. “Too far away from Luview for me to be in the ER.”

Score! Two big feather-down comforters, both of them a cream color with a patina that spoke more to their age than to a color palette at a textile factory. His fingers screamed as he gripped the thick, soft fabric, but he grabbed the top one and brought it to her, covering her.

As he started to wrap himself in the other one, he realized he was still soaking wet.

      So was she.

Thin hints of warmth began to creep out of the tiny woodstove and he turned his attention to the fire again, blowing on it lightly, then checking the flue.

Whew. All was well. He added a few small pieces of wood he found littering the backside of the woodstack and hoped the fire would continue to take.

“I’m cold. Wet. Brain slow. Mouth slower,” Colleen whispered, with a tiny smile.

“Since when do you have a slow mouth?”

      “Moore.”

His stomach dropped. Looking down at her, his down comforter on his shoulders, he panicked. Stress flooded him like he was underwater again, fumbling for her seatbelt, her life in his hands.

#3

Did his arms just tighten around her? Were his fingertips stroking her skin with a new, heightened intensity? Dreamy and light, she gave into the sensation, letting herself sigh. As her body stilled, a deep warmth, true and more real than any feeling she’d ever experienced, took over.

“I want to be free again,” he murmured against her hair, his leg moving against hers, her fingers on his chest desperate to explore.

“What does that mean to you?”

      “It means this.”

In all her years of dreaming about him, and many more spent pushing those dreams away, she never imagined it would happen like this–that Moore would simply hold her in his arms, move a few inches, and bridge the gap between them with a kiss. But here it was, and it felt so good.

      So right.

      So perfect.

Their lips met, his arms curling around her as she turned on her side gingerly, favoring her shoulder, the comforter softer, his muscles harder, the whole of him both familiar and tantalizingly new. Their mouths were soft together, then warm and wet as the kiss deepened, his fingers in her hair now, hers on his shoulder.

Moore’s tongue asked for an invitation and she parted her lips, the line now so thoroughly crossed that there was no line any longer.

      Just this kiss.

How could a kiss tell a story so long, so detailed, with so many detours and U-turns? All her wanting was in this kiss, all her time on the sidelines, all the friend-zone moments gathering to watch as Moore kissed her with growing need, their bodies pressed harder together.

They weren’t kids. She wasn’t his best friend’s older sister.

She was a fully grown woman whose life he had just saved, and she had nearly lost the chance to tell him how much he meant to her.

Now? Now she could show him.

      Finally.

Swift Six Character Interview – Augustus Thorne #Horror #Halloween

Name:  Augustus Thorne

Which book/world do you live in?  I live within an alternate present-day world where The Cambion Journals are a part of your reality . . . albeit we’re hidden in plain sight

Tell us about yourself: (Name, race/species, etc.) My name is Augustus Thorne, and I am a Cambion. A human-demon hybrid plagued with a terrible craving to feed on the life-force of those around me.  I was born during the November of 1760 to a wonderful human woman, Rosemary, whose patient guidance during my early years helped me to learn to resist the urge that would turn me into a fiend.

How do you see your world? As a foul light to be extinguished at the earliest opportunity.

What part do you play in this tale? I am the main protagonist. And you will follow the rollercoaster ride that is my everyday life as I hunt demons around the globe and deal with the fallout of my actions. Yet I couldn’t care less, I won’t rest until every last Succubus and Incubus is dead.

Do you consider yourself a good person/creature? Most certainly not. I’m a monster, cursed with a hunger I can barely control. Nobody in their right mind should come near me. But they do, to their cost.

Do you follow any religion? I worship on the altar of lives lost and dead scumbags. And I am unwavering in my devotions to sacrifice as many of the demondim as I can to the cause.

What is your favourite food? You and your most insidious, secret desires. The stronger the better.

Editor Interview – Carmilla Voiez

Hi, welcome to the Library of Erana and thank you for talking to us today.

1. Please introduce yourself.

Hello, I’m Carmilla Voiez, and I am a published author and editor with a First-Class degree in English Language and Creative Writing.

2. How did you get into this line of work?

I started out editing for CHBB/Vamptasy publishing when they had too much work for their usual editors.

3. Are there genres you refuse, if so why is that? Do you have any you love?

I am comfortable working in any genre and in both British and American English. As someone who loves the English language and enjoys making sentences dance, I love working with any genre from drama scripts to children’s fiction.

4. Are you also a writer?  If so do you self-edit or do you use the services of another editor?

I am a writer, and I always use another editor at some point in the process because it is difficult to spot all the errors in your own work. One trick to find most of them, if you cannot afford to hire an editor, is to listen to your story – most word processing programmes have this option.

5. Have you ever refused a manuscript?

Not from a paying client, but I do point out sensitivity issues and possible triggers. Whether the author uses this information or not is up to them.

6. Have you ever had an author refuse your suggestions/changes? If so how did you deal with it?

Yes, but as I am not a publisher, that is always the author’s choice. Mine is merely a supporting role.

7. Editors often receive a bad press in the writing community, what are your thoughts on this?

I don’t think it is any different to writers receiving bad press in the community. I haven’t received any negative feedback for my editing to date, but I hope I would react gracefully and let the critic rant away. I always do the best job I can, and I am proud of my interactions with clients and the writing community as a whole.

8. Please could you tell us about the process involved with editing for, say, a 100k word Manuscript. (Line edit, developmental  edit etc.)

The first stage is reading through and adding comments where problems exist. I am looking for plot holes, characterisation, repetition, sensitivity, and continuity issues, but I also point out any grammatical or spelling errors that I spot along the way. The document is then returned to the author for changes. When they have made any changes they wish, I get the revised document and do a line edit, which covers grammar, spelling and syntax, to ensure the language is as compelling as possible while retaining the author’s personal style.

9. What is the difference between proof-reading and editing?

Proof-reading requires a light touch; a proof-reader isn’t concerned with plot, only spelling and grammatical errors and will usually avoid changing idiosyncrasies in the author’s style. A full edit considers every aspect of the text in partnership with the author to ensure their manuscript is the best it can be without sacrificing the writer’s unique style or voice. A content edit would come before proof-reading so that any big changes can also be checked for errors.

10. Do you have part of the process you really enjoy? Is there a part you don’t?

I love it all, to be honest. It’s an honour to be trusted with another writer’s work and share ideas with the writer to help them develop the story and their skills. I build close relationships with clients, some of whom see me as a mentor as well as their editor.

11. Outside of your work as an editor do you read for pleasure? What genre do you enjoy the most?

I am a veritable book worm. I read widely and get different things from different genres. I love horror, especially psychological and supernatural horror, but I also love reading mysteries. The only genre I don’t read for pleasure is romance.

12. What are your plans for the future?

I will be helping undergraduates develop their drama scripts later this year, and I have applied to do the PGDE (teaching qualification), which if I am accepted, will start next August. Until August 2023 (when I expect to be so busy, I will need to put other projects on hold for ten months), I will be writing and submitting short stories, taking on editing projects, and tutoring.

The Devil’s Daughter

by C.A. King

Ghost Hunters had it wrong.

The Johnson brothers were living in the limelight, seeking out proof of the paranormal in front of the public eye. Fame, fortune, and success came hand-in-hand with evidence. Answers were worth their weight in gold. The trio had no idea they were asking all the wrong questions… until she appeared.

Pretty dresses and jewels meant nothing when all she wanted was respect. The moment Vallenna spiralled down a black hole, life turned upside down. It was the chance she’d been waiting her whole life for.

Born to rule two realms, but accepted by neither, the devil’s daughter is determined to leave her mark on both. Can the brothers stop her diabolical plans with only charisma and raw animal magnetism at their disposal?

I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn’t open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn’t need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes—I want them to know they are making a difference.

Fast forward to today…

Excerpt The Watcher – A Jack the Ripper Tale (c) A. L. Butcher

There she was, that whore. Once more. There she was.

Beneath the flickering gas lamp at the corner of Dorset Street, Whitechapel, she strode, grinning a seductive smile at a passing sailor, just ashore and looking for company. He, as bad as the bitch whose breasts he felt and whose ear he nipped with yellowing teeth, the unseen Watcher thought. With eyes burning hatred and a menace previously unseen and misunderstood. It was, he thought, a righteous hatred, and they blaze all the brighter for it. The beast within told him so. For he was the beast and he was its creature, at once the same.

She could have been twenty or forty; the Watcher neither knew nor cared. She’d not see another year, another week, another night. The dim streets grew ever wickeder to those of her sort spreading around their sin, their poison. Defiling this town, this land, defiling HER. The Watcher shook his head; no more whores and this place would rise like the jewel it was. Not jaded and dull but glorious and fit for a queen. The beast within whispered in his head. “Cleanse this town, make it fit again.” And so he did. A knife in the darkness, once more.

Geneva liquor and poverty aged a person far better than mere passing of the years. In the greatest Empire on Earth, they blighted the land. Gin palaces, opium dens, and hash houses aplenty gave heaven and hell to those with money, and those without. Life was cheap, and oblivion cheaper. The Watcher knew these unfortunates dropped their drawers for a taste of it, panting and moaning beneath the bridges and in the alleys, with their grunting men, and their penny a tumble.

The sailor moved on. He’d had his pleasure with another of her kind and spent his last pennies in the tavern, and she was here to work.  Nothing was free in her line of employment. Except for death.

So there she was, alone. Death walked these streets – and tonight it watched the red-haired whore, who sang and smiled and patted her new bonnet. There she was. The whore. Alone.

The minutes passed, creeping towards death; ebbing away from heaven and him ever closer to immortality. The whore did not know it. Of course, she’d heard the tales, everyone had. Screamed by newsboys on every corner “another ‘orrible murder” but rent still needed to be paid. And so she plied her trade. Afraid. Denying it would be her turn this night. A whore, alone.

Another night, another customer. Fear curled in her belly; these streets were streets of blood, four of her sisters slain in just a few weeks. But hunger was the greater force. Desperation made Mary-Jane brave – so she walked the streets, as she had often done. It wouldn’t be her, she thought. As they had. It couldn’t be her. Besides the police watched the alleys and the thoroughfares. The streets were largely empty, save the desperate and the foolhardy, and those too much in drink or lust to know or care.

The Watcher stood, beyond the pool of light from the gas lamp. This night was his. She would be his. This woman wasn’t as much a drab as some of her sisters-in-sin. Lust rose, entwined with his loathing. Two joined as one, desire and disgust, powerful and compelling. He’d never understood why they went together, but then he was a simple man, not one of the mind-doctors who had been so influential of late. The beast within did not care. Lust and hatred, pain and desire…bound so close he could experience little else when the darkness overtook him. Now, however, he watched.

The hunt was almost as enthralling as the kill; the knowledge of their fear, their desperation, and yet still they strutted themselves, offering a screw in the alleys and passages of the East End, and more if the customer had money and the taste for it. Filthy strumpets, he’d said to any who’d listen. Never did he consider the terrible choices they made. Never did he consider their choice was no real choice. What cared he for desperation and poverty? Respectable women did not sell their bodies. They kept sex for the marriage bed. SHE did – his icon, the woman he loved above all others.

The whores’ sins, the watcher thought, was what damned them. And they would pay, in this world and the next. He’d save London. He’d save it for HER. Blood would cleanse the streets.

Synopsis

The year is 1888, and the place is Whitechapel, in the very heart of London. But the heart is bleeding. A mysterious killer is stalking women of the streets – his true name is unknown, but his legend will go down in history. This is a short tale of Jack the Ripper.

18 rated for scenes of violence.

Book Spotlight – The Great Contagion – Jeff Chapman #DarkFantasy

Title: The Great Contagion: A Merliss Tale

Author: Jeff Chapman

Genre: Dark Fantasy

Main character description (short). Merliss is the spirit of a young girl trapped in the body of a cat. The magic that forced her spirit to reside in the cat has granted her an unusually long life. In her human life, Merliss was training to be a shaman. She uses her magic and herbal knowledge to fight disease and malevolent creatures.

Synopsis:

Plagues kill but Merliss has far more to fear than a disease.

Merliss is no ordinary cat. She’s a young girl’s spirit trapped in a cat’s body. While the magic that banished her has snatched away her ability to speak to humans, it has given her a life spanning millennia. For centuries she has lived with the cunning folk, assisting their efforts to heal the sick and ward off malevolent creatures. Now a bleeding sickness has thrown the medieval community into chaos.

The cunning man Hailaird and his apprentice Fendrel are in danger from the disease. The life Merliss has worked so long to build is in jeopardy. Before she entered the cat, she had trained to be a shaman. Do her centuries of experience hold a secret to a cure? But disease isn’t her only nemesis.

A pair of malevolent creatures have crossed the moor into the forest, threatening more havoc. With disease and monsters ravaging the land, Merliss is hard-pressed to survive. It couldn’t be worse, until a mob looking for a scapegoat turns its wrath on Merliss. Tooth and claw and magic may not be enough.

The Great Contagion is the gripping first novel in the dark fantasy Merliss Tales series. If you like strong and dynamic characters, rich description, magic and intrigue, then you’ll love Jeff Chapman’s Merliss Tales.

Brief Excerpt 250 words:

Torches glowed in the distance and flickered as the bearers passed behind trees.

“They almost caught me at the bridge,” Merliss said.

“I would brook no harm to you,” said Slynid. “You know that.”

“Not intentionally.” Consequences might write a different story.

“Promise me one thing. Promise me that you will go to faerie with me and learn what you could become.”

So was that all he wanted? She didn’t understand the greater game he was playing and she didn’t like being a piece on the board, but those cats were waiting. She hoped.

“I promise.”

The pooka grinned and Merliss sensed he had gotten what he wanted. She felt not a little used.

“I do this for you, Merliss. Now go!”

She ran. Wog’s power had restored her. She felt as fresh as if she had napped all day. Her senses were extra acute. At a full sprint, she avoided fallen branches, roots, and thin saplings as if she were walking. She leaped and sailed over a coney that she hadn’t seen flush until she passed it.

Behind her came a ferocious roar like a thousand bears made into one. She stopped. She had heard that voice before. On the riverbank during a storm. It roared again. But this was far louder and far wilder.

He had given her his last shift of the moon cycle. She certainly owed him. She felt certain he had scried and calculated his risk.

Next came the screams of men dying.
